    Hello,

So I brewed an IPA, its been sitting in primary for almost a week. At one week I will move to secondary and start to dry hop. I have never done this before and was wondering if someone could suggest a schedule. My recipe was:

    11lb US 2row
    1lb cara 30
    .5lb Victory

    0.5oz Warrior at 60min
    1oz Cascade at 15min
    1oz Cascade at 5 min

I would like to use mostly citra and/or Cascade.

    Thanks

    My suggestion:

Don't move it to secondary. Dry-hop with 2oz of Citra, or 2 oz of Cascade, in primary. You could also do 1 ounce of each...but I would just do 2 oz of one or the other.

Either way, dry-hop for 7 days.

So would it be okay to go 7 days in primary, then 7 days in primary with hops, and then move to secondary for a week, then bottle?

Use a hydrometer, not an arbitrary timeline to determine when your beer is ready to be moved anywhere.

I agree with JohnSnowNW about the dry hop suggestion.

Leave it in primary for another 7 days before dry-hopping. So a total of 3 weeks in primary. I believe I remember you starting a thread about it fermenting hot...so more time on that yeast cake is better.

Edit: As VikeMan pointed out..I'm advocating no secondary.

JohnSnowNW was suggesting skipping secondary altogether. I would agree.

2oz Citra and 1oz cascade sounds good to me. Skip the secondary and rack to the bottling bucket after 7-10 days on the hops. Bottle and carbonate for 14 more days.

Good luck, take notes and learn from you mistakes

    Cheers

Why is everyone saying to nix the secondary? Will skipping secondary result in a cloudy beer?

No. Time and Gravity apply in the primary as well as the secondary.

So you are saying stick to secondary after a week of dry hopping?

No, I'm really not. I'm saying that instead of doing a secondary, just leave the beer in the primary longer.

He is saying that the beer will clear just as much in the primary.

Here's what you should take from this thread. Your beer fermented high, it's not going to be a great beer...but it will be drinkable and, at this point, focusing on things such as clearing is just going to be a waste of your time.

    Your process:

Ferment in primary for 2 weeks, then dry-hop for 7-days (in primary), then move to bottling bucket and bottle.

I like a citra/cascade combo and do not really care for cascade alone. Since you went light on your finishing hops I would go fairly big for the dry hop. At least 2oz of each should do the trick. Like others said, wait 2 weeks then dry hop in primary (or keg would be better but sounds like you are bottling).
