Putting together an Downtown LA brewery crawl at the end of the month and wanted some recommendations (or arguments) for places for brunch (we start at 11:00 am) and second lunch roughly along our path. Here’s the general plan:

Train from OC gets in around 11:00 am

    - Highland Park Chinatown (assuming it’s open)
    - Mumford
    - Mikkeller
    - Modern Times

Other beer location/bars/breweries are also welcome. I tried a poll as well, but I’m not certain if others can add locations. Thanks!

We just did this 2 Sunday’s ago. MetroLink gets you in to Grand Central at 1030am. Weekend $ cost you $10 for the entire day anywhere. Use that same $10 ticket and jump on the red or purple Metro 3 stops to (can’t remember). When you exit to street you are near Whole FoodsDT. Walk 5 minutes to Dojo. That’s a good starting point for you run/walk. They open at 7am for coffee. But you can get inside just before 11 and get situated. Or go grab brunch somewhere else before doing the craft beer run. Or you can start from the worse (Arts and Angel) and work your way to the best (Mumford, Dojo and HpB Chinatown. You could throw in Mikkeller. Don’t forget to add urination streets/sidewalks to get to some of these places. You might want to bring a mask to wear. Or just take Uber.

kind of depends on what you're into. there's everything from fussed-over foodie type places to taco trucks. if you're into Japanese food then that's a whole other discussion

honestly I would just have lunch at Mikkeller or MT. breakfast, the brunch buffet at Border Grill would be a good place to prepare your stomach for some day drinking

I posted a similar question in another thread a while back. Based on those replies and my own experience, here’s what I suggest...

From Union Station, walk to Philippe’s and order a “double dipped” beef dip sandwich. It’s not huge or overly filling, but delicious! From there, walk back through Olvera St (since you’re already there anyway) and order a couple taquitos from the Cielito Lindo stand. Walk across the freeway, through Little Tokyo and over to Mumford. From Mumford, walk up 3rd st and down Broadway to Grand Central Market. There’s a ton of great options to choose from for food there. From there, walk over to Spring and 5th and check out The Last Bookstore (again, since you’re practically already there already anyway and I just happen to love books). From there, walk back up 5th st, cut through Pershing Sq and down Olive st to Modern Times. After Modern Times, depending on how you feel, you can take the metro at Pershing Square back to Union Station. However, I recommend walking back, taking in the sights and sounds (and smells) of DTLA, and stopping at Shin Sen Gumi in Little Tokyo for a bowl of ramen. If you’re still up for more beer after that, you can walk over to Boomtown on the way back to Union Station to catch your train. Enjoy!

IF you’re into Korean food you can take the red or purple line to K town and you have plenty of choices. But it’s all about the side dishes. Panchan. Beer Belly is in K town. J town has some good J food. And Far Bar.

If you threw Philippe's on the list you might as well walk a few more blocks and try some venerable Chinatown standbys like Won Kok or Yang Chow.

That slippery shrimp is a g-damn DTLA rite of passage. Almost as much as talking a pal into slathering too much Philippe's mustard on their sandy.

Boomtown Brewery is improving.. They've been getting lumped in with Angel City, Golden Road, Iron Triangle, and the likes but they're improving and a notch right below Modern Times, Mumford, Mikkeller imo

OP, since you said you’d be starting around 11, you may want to go straight to The Dojo first. It’s been really crowded there both times that I’ve been. Uncomfortably crowded for my liking. Getting there early would get you a place to sit and the ability to get multiple flights/pours easily.

True.. MT is a notch above Mumford but Mumford is really starting to hit their stride and one of my favorites in LA. I like Mikkeller as well

Might not be fancy, but I'd stuff my self full at Aloha Cafe on the way to Mumford for "Brunch". Loco Moco and some coffee, then just go to town on beers.

KazuNori handrolls are delightful in their simplicity if you feel like sushi.

Here is what you should do.

Arrive into Union Station. Take the purple or red line to Pershing Square (both lines go to the same spot) and exit toward Hill st (the other exit throws you two blocks away). Have brunch at Grand Central Market. A litany of choices. Most pretty good. Brunch options for everyone.

Then hop back on the Metro and exit 7th/hope. Walk a couple blocks to Modern Times. Finish at Modern Times and walk a few more blocks to Mikkeller.

Then Uber to Highland Park Chinatown. It'll be quicker than going metro as you have to connect lines to the Chinatown Metro stop.
