Hi midwest crew, I'm moving to Dubuque for a short work stint (18mo to 2 years) this August with regular trips to Madison and Platteville. While I know the Madison circuit pretty well, I know nothing about Dubuque or Platteville. Any tips on good pubs/bars/bottle shops? If any of you are local to Dubuque and get together for tastings or homebrew, feel free to shoot me a message sometime. Slightly off topic, but if you know Dubuque well, I'd love tips on neighborhoods that are young family-friendly and provide easy access to 61 - we're looking at some of the downtown revitalization (like the Caradco apartments or the Washington neighborhood), but know nothing of the area yet - just what we've seen online, so we don't know if we're sniffing up the wrong tree. Hope to meet some of ya'll over the next year or two!
Discussed a little while ago. Hope it helps. http://www.beeradvocate.com/communi...good-spots-to-grab-a-brew.82186/#post-2428760
I thought you might get more replies on this one. I don't live in Dubuque but have been there several times. Busted Lift will sometimes have some good beers, other than that Dubuque pubs are pretty run of the mill. Toppling Goliath lists Lot One as having TG on tap but I haven't seen it when I stopped by. The best bottle shops are in East Dubuque which is across the river in Illinois, but easy to get to. I like Family Liquor but Van's is also usually worth checking out. You will have many more options when you travel to Madison.
Grew up in Dubuque, parents still live there, typing this in Dubuque so hopefully I can give some info.the bars have been pretty well covered. Along with The busted lift, I'd recommend Eronel they have a good selection and are culturally the coolest bar, lots of art and live music, along with an awesome atmosphere. I prefer Lot One, usually a real good tap list and 3 out of the last times I've been there Toppling Goliath has been on tap. Also Monk's cafe is supposed to be good although I've never been. Also if your looking for a dive bar Paul's tap is close to the aforementioned bars and is one of the divey-est bars you'll go to, make sure to get a cheeseburger. For beer stores as the other posted recommended, Family Liqour in East Dubuque has the best selection since it carries Illinois distrobution, and you can grab singles of whatever you want. My grandparents own Beechers Liqour and Ice Cream in Dubuque so I have to give a plug for that, not the best selection of beer but they do have the best ice cream in the tri-states. If your looking for your New Glarus fix there's a grocery store in Dickyville(15 minutes NE on HWY151) called Kieler Grocery/Liqour that carries the 750's and all the core brews along with most of the thumbprint stuff, you may have to ask for it from the back sometimes since they still have snowshoe and spiced ale on the shelves. I'm not an expert on housing but I'll give it a shot. 61 is closer to the older side of the town whereas 20 has a lot of the newer development. Any of the old neighborhoods are great, but if your looking for suburb style living check on the west side of town. Although it may be far now I believe in 2-4 years there will be an arterial highway linking hwy 20 to 61, should cut down time. The new development downtown looks great still an unfinished product but I can say it looks cool. If you can afford check out the neighborhoods on or close to Grandview street, they're pretty nice. Hope that helps!
