Went recently to my local Beermuda to find new beers (Hop Knife YES!) and while he was looking over my beers he noticed a Du Claw beer and he told me they stocked colossus for a couple days and then removed it for some reason.

He said he got a bottle and tried it (paid $3.50) and was not overly impressed but didn't give me any closure as to why it was removed.

So has this happened anywhere else? I know we don't have an alcohol cap and the beer is pretty awful to some but I am a huge fan of high octane so its on my hit list.

That's news to me, since I just saw it on shelves this Wednesday. No idea, maybe they think the ABV is off, but it is lower this batch due to issues with the yeast.

Interesting. I just saw it yesterday ($7.99, expensive?) but passed on it since I was already buying a few other things.

Had it on draft, mid-September in the central PA (Al's) and it seemed fine.

Had a bottle of the latest batch about a week ago. Awful beer, but not for reasons that would necessitate being pulled from shelves. Still have another bottle, so will be watching this thread...

Whoa. I paid a lot more than $3.50 for a bottle in NJ. I think close to $10 (but maybe only $8?)

Ah maybe that is why they pulled it since it was ridiculously cheap.

If it really was 7+ dollars I don't think I would buy it even once.

I enjoyed it. $5.99 a bottle here in NJ.

Only places here in PA I've seen it so far commanded $10 a bottle.

Interesting...I wonder why it was pulled. I got two bottles last night for the hell of it. $5.99 per bottle. Last time I saw it on the shelves it was a 22oz bomber for $30.

Yeah, the first release was in bombers and it was $30. The initial release was also 21% abv. The more recent releases that I have seen are around 17-18% abv. I think the bottles that I saw were $7 but they have been around since about March.

Honestly the beer isn't any good which shouldn't be a big surprise as it was brewed by Duclaw. It is a super sweet malty mess and unless you like sugar and booze you most likely won't enjoy this beer.

Actually, the initial release was in 1 liter swing top bottles (a picture of which is contained at the beer description site). As I recall, Du Claw did a second release of the initial brew a couple years later, and this time it was sold in 22 ounce bombers. The second batch Du Claw brewed was also released in 22 ounce bombers, and this time Du Claw distributed a limited number of kegs as well.

As for your other comment, I think it's debatable as to whether or not the beer is any good, though personally, I think your description of the beer is otherwise completely accurate. Beers like repent, colossus and the various retribution and divine retribution beers are among the sweetest, booziest beers I've ever tasted. Personally, I think most of them are pretty awful, but I assume someone must be buying them, because Du Claw keeps on making them.

Fair enough, I mispoke when I said the first release. I guess I meant the fist time I saw it and therefore the first time it saw distribution was when it was in bombers and was 21% abv.

I buy some of their beers for the novelty but the realty is most of their beers aren't very good.

Sorry, I didn't mean to come across as critical. It's completely understandable that you never saw any of the initial release. Du Claw bottled very little of it; it was only available at their brewpubs (I got mine at the old Brewpub on Bond Street over in Fells Point, just to give you an idea how long ago this was), and I think they sold out of it in a couple of days. I picked up a couple of bottles for a friend up in Pa. on the day of the release, otherwise I never would have gotten any. When I called around roughly a week later to see if there was any more available, every one of the brewpubs I called indicated it was sold out. My guess is that Du Claw probably released no more than a couple hundred bottles of that initial release.

It's still on the shelves on the Eastern Shore(MD) and lower Delaware. I was surprised how much I liked this one. I did try it for the novelty, but I bought a couple more because I liked the flavor.

E-mailed DuClaw and was told all is good with Colossus so if you like it, drink up. If not, more for me!

I have a bomber of the 2011 release sitting in my basement. It's slated for opening in 2020. I hope I don't find myself wishing I had another.

However, reviews of that beer said it was super-sweet - not surprising as it clocked in at a hefty 21.92%. A similar recipe that only got to 17% must be one hell of a syrupy mess. I might pick up a bottle for my pancakes.

LOL! T'Bonz in Ellicott City held a pancake brunch to go along with their keg back in 2011. As you indicated, Colossus went quite well with pancakes and maple syrup.
