Thinking of going over between jobs for a wee break. Couple questions - I fly into Weeze, it looks a total ball ache to get to Düsseldorf at the moment because of rail line closures. Does anyone have any swerves that might make our transfer faster please? Beer…..any tips and recommendations would be gratefully accepted please. It looks terrific for a pub crawl, which ones are recommended to visit and which ones are good food wise? Anyone aware of any of these pubs that also provide accommodation? I’m a big fan of staying in these types of accommodation as opposed to chain hotels. Thanks in advance!

I like Schumacher best for beer. Their food is good, too. I love the Brauhausfrikadelle (sort of a hamburger/meatloaf/meatball type thing) with fried potatoes. Their main brewery on Oststrasse is about a 10 minute walk from the train station. I dig all of the Alt beer breweries in Düsseldorf. Hit 'em all! Plus stop at the Killepitsch bar across from Uerige for a couple shots! In late September some friends and I stayed for the first time at the new Premier Inn Düsseldorf City Friedrichstadt. All three rooms we had were great. Plus it's only a three minute walk from the exit of the train station to the front door of the hotel. We paid 43.00 for a single room (which had a queen size bed), slightly more for a double room. The only shitty thing was that they didn't allow us to check in early. On previous visits I have stayed at the ibis Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof without complaint. It's has an entrance from the train station.
Weeze is always a ball ache to get to/from even when there aren't any closures. It is in the middle of nowhere very much, and metaphorically if not literally the end of the line. You will have to put up with the rail replacement bus and consider flying into DUS next time. DUS is ridiculously easy to get to, it's like 6 minutes on the subway to the city centre, direct. When you eventually reach Düsseldorf the good news is that it's brilliant. All but one of the best beer halls are quite close to each other. Schlüssel is probably the lightest flavoured Alt, Uerige the most bitter. Food is usually very good.
Well, while you're in Düsseldorf, visiting all of the major Alt breweries is kind of a must, obviously. Schumacher, Uerige, Füchschen and Schlüssel are all reasonably close to each other and there's also Holy Craft, a craft beer bar which is between Schlüssel and Füchschen. It's not great, but worth a visit if you're looking for a change of pace from all that altbier. Brewery Hop Map Düsseldorf is also famous for being home to a very large Japanese community and as a result there are many great Japanese restaurants and shops to be found in the area inbetween the main train station and city center, especially along Immermann street. I haven't been to all of these, but from word of mouth I would recommend Takumi for ramen, Maruyasu for sushi and Kushi-Tei for an authentic Izakaya-style bar/restaurant. If you are into Japanese culture, you may also want to take a short train ride up to the Nordpark and visit the EKO house. Also, Cologne is just a half hour train ride away if you want to check out some of the Kölsch breweries as well.
I've always liked the food and beer at Im Füschen, the last tiem in 2018 the beer was better than I remembered. Shoemacher is pretty good for both. My favorite place to drink altbier is Zum Uerige. That beer is a bit of an oulier wirh very high bitterness, but Ive parked my rear end there and lived glass after glass.
I agree with Snowcrash, if you're going to Düssey, you sure as heck better go to Cologne as well. It would be a sin not to. And if you wanted to try Frankenheim Alt, the restaurant tap is only a 15 minute walk from the train station. But it's sort of in the wrong direction away from the Düsseldorf greatest hits. Brilliant stuff folks! By chance my hotel is next door to Schumacher!! Tuesday we will indeed visit Cologne. Be nice as I had my stag there 10 years ago and ain’t been back. We are going to go there morning time and have lunch and a few then onto Leverkusen to see their Champions League game v Club Brugge.
Well airport Weeze is about 30 km north west of Düsseldorf.you must go the local Train Station in Weeze Town and take a regional Rapid Train to Krefeld.their you can easily switch trains all the way to Düsseldorf or Neuss wich is close to Düss and worth a Trip too. In the city of Neuss they have great Beer as well . I recommend the Neusser Dom Beer wich you can enjoy at the lovely Brauhaus im Dom on Michael Street in Neuss. They got Alt Beer,Weizen and Keller Beer Home Made Its a local Micro Brewery And its fantastic Beer After that you can go to Düsseldorf Altstadt Old Town Wich is still amazing to go there Schuhmacher Brewery and Uerige Brewery are amazing,so are the Schlüssel Brewery and Füchschen Brewery . Düssel Alt (brewed by Hirschbräu Düsseldorf) has been gone the last 20 years or so, if I am not mistaken.
RIP Altbier. No one outside of that area drinks it, and even they don't drink it anymore. Had to laugh though...next to the article an ad for "Eifelbraeu Helles" - it's so bizarre to see a helles in the 0.5 liter Euro bottle coming from Bitburger.
The German beer writer Sylvia Kopp recently described the recent “popularity” as “a tsunami of Helles”. It's unclear to me why breweries all over Germany are suddenly trying to promote this style.
