Better off Prague -> Munich/Bamberg -> Düsseldorf (or reverse) to avoid a lot more time traveling.

It all evens out -- we have lots of good beer towns to visit on this side of the pond  And we both have to haul ass to visit Japan

Is the Hellers weiss a top fermented wheat or a Kolsch?

Thx for the detailed AAR. We went to Scion and got turned off watching the minimal glass washing the waiters do - 1 dip and it's ready again. Peters was my favorite for beer, Malzmuhle for the food.

Historically, Wiess is the predecessor to Kölsch, back from a time when no filtration technology existed, so this is what brewers call an unfiltrated Kölsch today, which they are not allowed to call by that appellation due to the Kölsch Convention.

Weizen and Kölsch are both top fermented, by the way.

the wiess (not weiss. sorry to be pedantic ha) is obergarige, top fermented. its basically just an unfiltered koelsch.

im cool with the glass washing thing, one dip to wash, one dip to rinse, put some beer in it, jobs a good un

    Thanks for the tip!

I was actually just listing where I was planning on going, no particular order.

But I was curious about the best way to tackle it.

I did something similar before. Munich to Amsterdam to Brussels.

Last year we did Prague -> Bamberg -> Düsseldorf -> Antwerp -> Amsterdam. All the prices are 2nd class.

Deutsche Bahn (DB) runs an express bus between Prague and Nürnberg (and also München, I think) If you buy tickets in advance it can be as cheap as €19

DB train from Bamberg -> Düsseldorf (RE/RB to Würzburg, ICE to Düsseldorf). Full fare is like €120 but discount tickets at €50 are not unheard of. However, it is a very boring trip, scenery wise. SBB (Swiss Rail) runs an EC train with a panoramic car between Zürich and D-dorf, going thru Mainz. This is along the Rhine with all the castles. You can get to Mainz easily from Würzburg. It takes longer and may cost a bit more but my friends that do it love it.

München -> D-dorf is a regular ICE route.

There is an DB ICE train from Köln to Brussel (if that is were you are going) but there is another DB Bus from D-dorf -> Antwerp. This year, we got tickets for €15 per person by buying 3 months in advance.

Antwerp -> Amsterdam is a Dutch IC (€20-40) or a high speed Thalys (more expensive, takes 1:15 instead of 1:45)

Between Bamberg/München and D-dorf be sure and spring the extra for a seat reservation, otherwise you may stand.

I will be traveling to Koln/Dusseldorf after Quintessence for one night in each city.

Love the reviews.....but, are there any recommendations on where to stay in each city? Centrally located to transit, bars, and any must-see sites is a plus, obviously.

Thanks in advance for any tips! Cheers!

I can't really help you that much with Hotels in Cologne as I obviously don't use them, so they're not really on my radar. The Altstadt area would be a great place to stay, obviously, with plenty of bars and sights in the area, although it's also rather touristy.

The two biggest, most obvious options in the area are the Dorint and Maritim, with the latter being right across the street from Malzmühle, one of the best Kölsch breweries in town, although I'm sure they can't be cheap. Actually Malzmühle has a small hotel as well and some of the rooms feature taps where you can pour your own Kölsch!

Let me know if you're up for a small IP trade while you're in Cologne, I can offer some Lambic and proper Franconian beers that you won't be able to find around here. If you have any other questions, let me know.

Thanks for the advice! Much appreciated!

As far as an IP trade, I didn't have any plans to bring beers over, since I will be hitting Cantillon/3F prior to this.....and I am not checking any luggage. (I will be shipping back to US via BiaB/Etre)

I would be happy to meet up for a beer if you would like!

    Cheers!
