I had my first opportunity to sample this beer the other day. It was very enjoyable but unfortunately it is about 70% more expensive than the regular Duvel in my location (China). Is this pricing discrepancy normal for these two beers?

Based on numbers I've seen (and spent) around here the Triple Hop is usually about 20% more expensive than the regular Duvel. So a 70% discrepancy isn't what I'd expect to see.

Back when Tripel Hop was first released, it was a limited edition in fancy 0.75l champagne style bottles for 9.90Euros at Delhaize. Im glad it is there every year now and cheaper.
I really like it, as well as Houblon Chouffe.

How much did you pay for the regular Duvel? I've never seen the Tripel Hop in China, but I think Duvel is usually around 25-30RMB per bottle. So the Tripel was about 43-50RMB? That seems a bit high.

Here on LI, the tripel hop versions might run a few dollars more, not 70% more.

Crate of Duvel costs 25€, crate of Tripel Hop costs 40€ (prices in Belgium)

From my limited experience here about 25RMB is an average bottle shop price. I was in a bar, so the regular Duvel was higher, with the Triple Hop being correspondingly so. On a related note, pricing for beer where I am is all over the board. Some things seem quite reasonable, while others are over the top. A bottle of Nogne O Imperial Stout is 120RMB, which seems steep. On the other hand, I got a 330ml bottle of Koningshoeven Quad for 26RMB, which seemed very reasonable to me.

Yeah, prices are all over the place all over the place. Kind of like everything else. :stuck_out_tongue: I've never seen Nogne O in the country either, but generally it seems like German and Belgian beers have the smallest price premium. I don't know if that's some kind of tax preference or some other effect. You can get pretty good prices for 12-'packs' of Belgian beers on Amazon or JD. American beer prices are terrible though.

The Tripel Hop here runs a couple of bucks higher in both the 4pk and 750mL formats - usually a good $4-5 higher than the standard Duvel.

Backing up @DavidW, in the home country it seems to be a few coins more per serving, and perhaps that's good business for them (although risky if people come to say the normal Duvel as less premium). Fine by me either way. I see it occasionally on "promo" in bars at the normal Duvel price. I'm not as excited about the current blend and hoping they keep mixing it up. ANYway, certainly not a 70% markup here but it's a pretty competitive market in Belgium with lots of product vying for shelf space.

While we're on the subject, how is the Triple Hop version? I don't care about price. I just want to know if it is more enjoyable than the regular Duvel? Does the taste make the price justifiable? Do you recommend it? How does it differ from the regular Duvel?

Had not seen the 2015 Triple Hop might I ask what hops they used this year?

Also seeing people review the 2014 version now (with a year on it) makes me shake my head. SHAME!

What's the craft beer situation like in China? I have to assume the regulations are incredible. Is there any American craft beer exported to China? My guess is anything like that is made there or possibly shipped from Europe. I really don't know much about this kind of thing, but I've always found the geopolitical aspect of beer very interesting.

While perusing the wares in a higher end grocery store while in Shanghai, I was surprised to see Saranac along with the Belgian and other Euro beers. I passed, but it was surprising to say the least.

On topic, however, I am able to get Duvel and Tripel Hop for the same price my local bottle shop.

I wish it was cheaper. Heck, I wish all Belgian beer was cheaper.
