Do you look forward to summer for your nightly beer and baseball as much as I do?

I’m looking for a group of guys (or gals) who are as dorky about beer and baseball as I am to start a dynasty fantasy baseball league. My hope is to keep this league going for years to come, so you’ve got to be serious about fantasy baseball. I know that most people don’t want to adjust their rosters and check box scores every single day, but I also know I’m not the only one who considers it the highlight of my day, so I’m looking for some fellow baseball/beer nerds.

Of course the beer tie-in is the prizes.I played in a league last year where the buy in was two “light whales”. I’m no Ahab, so I can’t give you a precise definition of that, but some of beers in the mix were Jackie O’s Kentucky Monk, Dark Lord, Curmudgeon’s Better Half, Mother Funker, BA BORIS, Kate, Dissident, Darkness, Eclipse, etc. So a lot of good beers but nothing too crazy.

It might also be cool to do a preseason locals BIF to share something to drink during the draft with other league members.

By dynasty league I mean a league in which we will have an initial draft, and you will be able to keep any and all players on your roster for as long as you want. I like this idea because it’s the closest thing you can find to being an actual GM, requires a lot more thought and analysis in drafting, trading, free agents, etc., and is really a way to keep baseball relevant all year round (here’s the ESPN article that inspired me).

I’m still working on hammering out the specific rules, but here are some thoughts:
-I like auction drafts, but would be open to snake
-Deep rosters. Depending on how many teams we have, but at least 30 players per team, probably more.
-Trade deadline around week 15 of 20.
-Consolation bracket to keep everyone interested throughout the season
    -Divisions with weighted schedules
    -10 category Head-to-head scoring

If you’re interested, BM me and provide your email address. I’ll start a league on ESPN as soon as they open it up.

I'm not trying to deter you, but if you haven't done fantasy baseball before, you may be in for a rough time with this format.

David, how many people so far?

I'll second what he said, it could be tough for you. Generally that's not a problem in normal fantasy leagues, but a really bad first year in this type of league will probably doom you long enough to make you quit before you can recover. That being said, I'm not going to prohibit anyone from playing, unless the rest of the league wants to. Just a friendly warning.

5 people so far...you, me, and the three above you. I think that's actually pretty good for January. I'm sure more people will get interested as we get closer.

I was thinking about this today at work and was laughing at the idea of how insane this would be if it were an auction draft. I tossed up a few ideas on the ESPN board on things I read about on how long term keepers could be set up. Also know I swore at you a few times as I was being sucked into this.

I've actually changed my position on this since my original post, and I'm thinking a snake draft would be a lot better for this format. Valuing players and budgeting for a 40-man roster and unproven rookies seems a little too daunting and ridiculous.

I've been working on hammering out the rules and I'll try to post them later tonight as a public Google Doc. I also tried to send you an email through the espn league. I used a few of your suggestions.

I laughed and the immediately thought of this

All I can tell you is that you better read a bunch of material on active roster players, prospects, and even high school players. With 10 to 12 teams at 40 guys plus, you are talking about DEEEEEEEEEEEEEP baseball knowledge. I also recommend doing this draft on a day where we can offline draft in a chat room or via Skype or something like that. 90 seconds to do research on a 34th round player may be asking a lot.

for sure... I've got a pretty good grip on whos good now and later but read up i will... perhaps i'll begin now...

what kind of buy in are we talking for this shindig? i'm not really as whale heavy as many of you are.

I can cover any range of how deep people want to go. Whatever the rest of the eventual group decides on is fine with me.

I may have to bow out simply due to lack of guns big enough to give it the spice the eventual lineup would want on the table

I'm also fine with any level of beer depth. But to put jebsinger's mind at ease, I can't imagine we're talking about cases of whalez here.

And I second the idea of a snake draft for simplicity sake, but I am certainly willing to overpay for mike trout in an auction if that's what it comes down to...

Also, we should be able to trade players for beer!

I'm fine with you getting Trout and Verlander with your first 2 picks as long as I get who I want with my first 2 picks!

I'm all for a super deep league. I love it when there's no "fantasy advice" out there and its all on the owner. Also, I'm for either way (snake or auction), but auction is super legit and makes things fun and interesting. Budgeting too will be really fun...imagine halfway through some teams paying $1 for a decent player then at the end of the draft $1 for no-names and prospects...hilarious yet challenging.
