In August I'm going to make the pilgrimage to Skylight Inn BBQ. I know Mother Earth is nearby but was wondering if there was anything else to recommend a stop at. Thanks!

Duck Rabbit is in Farmville! Am I missing something about Skylight Inn? you're making a pilgrimage to it? I've lived there for like 10 years (Greenville, at least) and never heard of it.

    Forgot about Duck Rabbit.

On Skylight. It's continually ranked one of the best bbq restaurants in the nation. And sometimes makes it on "Best Restaurants" regardless of style lists. I've been once and it was fantastic. Best pork I've ever had.

Oh wow, duly noted! I'll have to stop by next time I'm in town. I haven't really heard of many breweries around the area in my time living there but I also didn't get really into beer until I moved to Greenville, SC. Where will you be driving through?

From Raleigh. So there isn't much in between, that I know/knew of.

Greenville, NC has 3 now. Trollingwood opened in 2015. Pitt Street and Uptown came after that.

Pitt Street is all I’ve had and it’s been good. I would suggest coming back thru rocky mount and stopping at Hopfly. They are really so dang good and they release their first cans starting this week I believe (or next). If you have the time and stomach capacity go from Skylight to Sam Jones’s to compare, same family, one is the father and one is the son. Sam Jones usually has a good handful of local drafts available (and also always shiner bock haha). Tarboro Brewing in downtown Tarboro could be a good stop and Tarboro can be on the way heading back to Raleigh from Greenville or Farmville (if you go to duck rabbit). Then the next town over to the west, heading back to raleigh is rocky mount for hopfly haha, there ya go, all planned out HAHA! Good luck and have fun and eat tons!!

My fiance and I recently stopped in Sam Jones on the way to my moms. Loved it. She liked it more than Skylight. She didn't like any of the sides at Skylight when we went last time.

My brother tends to like Skylight more. As for me, I can’t pick, I’ll sit down and eat skylight, sam jones, and Parker’s at the same time, haha, no bbq loyalty here except that it’s eastern nc. If I had to say, I like the crispy skin that skylight mixes in. But I can see the appeal of sam jones over skylight. It’s a bit more meticulously chopped and mixed and being a newer place it feels cleaner and more cozy. Most ladies I know tend to like Sam Jones over Skylight. Sam Jones cooked a few weeks ago at Players Retreat in Raleigh and I missed it! He was doing bbq and chicken all day. So mad!

Does Sam Jones typically not have the cracklins mixed in? Because I had some huge pieces in mine when we were there. And I love that. That’s what really blew me away at my first trip to Skylight ha. Also I've never heard of Parkers, I'll have to look into that.

Man! Maybe they do! See what I mean, I can’t even keep my fave bbq places straight. I think you’re right. I love the cracklins too. Parker’s is a Wilson and Greenville staple, been around since long before me. Also, B’s bbq in Greenville is almost as legendary as Skylight. It’s near the hospital and people start showing up around 10am. They’re only open until they sell out, which sometimes can even be before 2pm. It varies but if you ever put B’s on your list, a safe time to arrive is like 11/1130.

I went to B's last year on the way to the OBX. It was delicious!

And it looks like Parkers is on the way as well, will stop there in a few weeks when we go.

If you're heading to Kinston, you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not eating at the Chef & the Farmer. Sounds like you may need to bring a second stomach if your priority is BBQ though.

I've been once and it was easily one of the best meals I've ever had. But bbq is priority as my friend has been wanting to make his first trip to Skylight for two summers now.

We ended up at Hopfly on our way home. It was so good. And with three other breweries right there it makes Rocky Mount an attractive staycation destination.

The bbq was awesome too. Those cracklins <3

I really truly love Hopfly and every time I make the trek through rocky mount I stop. I can’t wait till cans hit raleigh tomorrow, buying all of the four packs. Haha. It’s amazing what’s hes already done with that brewery and the festivals he’s already been a part of, can jam, juicy brews, etc. So glad you made it there! And man, just looking at that bbq and cracklins makes me have to have that in my life SOON!

I saw Tasty Bev post on IG that they were releasing Hopfly cans a few hours after we got home, which I thought was funny. My photo was Summer Crush, I'm interested in trying their session NEIPA. It was such a neat little area. Took me three U-Turns to find it though haha.

And the BBQ was top notch. Easily worth the day trip alone.

My eastern NC (and also Casita loving) peeps, give this podcast a listen if you need to occupy an hour of your day. I usually care to learn about the breweries in our state and the breweries of the beer I love, but I have just been overlooking the story behind this couple. Pretty awesome that they've been able to call eastern NC home once again. Whether it continues to be Duck Rabbit, or elsewhere, I hope they keep they're feet, and beer, planted here.

Speaking of Casita, has anyone seen any stragglers of Southward recently? I could have SWORN that I have recently seen a random bottle here and there gathering dust on some area bottle shop shelves, and now for the life of me cannot remember which shops those were. I was thinking Pelagic and Sams Quik Shop, but I double checked at Pelagic and its either finally gone or pushed way back on crowded shelves. I know this seems like an outlandish ask, but I know I've recently seen it being low key over looked and ignored. It just hit me how much I'd love to stumble upon another bottle, haha. So if you've seen it and care to share that knowledge, holler at me!
