...I wonder if it would include a brewery like the one in NYC. If so, would it be w/ Dogfish? a different brewery? http://bostonrestaurants.blogspot.com/2013/11/eataly-could-be-coming-to-boston.html
I would say that if they open here, then it will likely have a DFH-run brewery. Rationale? The Chicago Eataly that opens this month has one.
Yeah, I was pretty sure the enterprise is part owned by Sam/DFH. Elsewise its some sort of official partnership. I dunno how much traction it would get in Faneuil Hall? The area could use a decent beer stop but there's already a number of small Italian grocery type spots in the North End it could potentially put out of business.
If it weren't for the Wegman's going in there, I'd say the Landmark Center development would be a nice fit for it.
Agreed on Fenway but it would be a huge improvement to the faneuil hall side of the Haymarket area...would love to see it be a big part of the Ink Block development of the South End.
spoiler: the beer element of eataly isn't shit, but it *is* a big deal if eataly opens in boston. yeah, they have DFH and italian beer at about twice the price of anywhere else, but they also have amazing produce, olive oil, pestos, beautiful pastas made on premises, great chocolates, the best yogurts and spreads, really good bread (if a bit salty at times) and cakes, etc. far and away the best grocery store in manhattan, and not as pricy as it seems if you shop smart. i haven't bought any beer that isn't flat and has spent time in barrels, but i've bought a ton of food there.
My buddy in New York says the same. He occasionally texts my pics of the pastas he's having made for him. The S-mart reference killed me. Ha!
Withstanding sarcasm, many would agree with you. i could see this doing well over by the old filenes basement site.
They should link up to that morbidly obese Italian guy who puts pictures of himself on all ads and billboards, his places seem to do well.
I had to look up the name, but yeah, he's the guy. He looks like he could use a salad and a neck towel.
I only know him because he's always plastered inside the pages of the Improper Bostonian. I know he owns the 2 Strega's...not sure what else
There's a new hideous, overpriced "Strega Prime" Steakhouse near me in Woburn. Was dragged there last month & hated my meal even on someone else's dime. I don't see the attraction to this used-car-salesman-turned-restaurateur' s empire. Although - back to the OP'S thread...an Eataly would be cool. From all accounts Mario Batali is a good guy & his other Eataly outposts are nice. Will reserve my judgment on the DFH brewpub affiliated with it because: a) I don't see Boston letting it happen (licensing) b) I'm not a fan of DFH beer.
