I found that the beers I've enjoyed most were also ones I was drinking while eating. Sometimes, I'm already full and I'll try a new beer by itself. Other times, I'll try a new beer with a batch of fries or with a meal. I seem to enjoy the beer some, especially when I'm eating fries! I try beer by itself because I want to get a real feel for the taste without anything interfering with the experience, but food has always enhanced my perception of the beer's flavor.

I know some craft beers are suggested to be enjoyed along with a certain type of meal, I know Rogue Ales list what types of foods go well with each of their beers.

I always enjoy something with my beer. It can really bring out flavors in the beer and the food, too. It really is like magic in a way! I know I like ipa's with pasta with ragu sauce. Stouts are great for desserts, which are my favorite combinations!

Right now, this burger topped with sliced turkey and Havarti is pairing fantastic with Surly Darkness. Usually I like Chirba Chirba dumplings with my Fullsteam beer.

Alot of times the flavors will match up really well and play off of eachtother on your tastebuds for a new combination of flavors or to create for example a sweet savory type of thing. I know when we did Great Divide Barrel Aged Yeti we paired with the brownies on the label and was amazing together.

    Cheers!

most times i like beer on a fresh palate without food flavors, food can definatley compliment beer, but i like to try a new/semi-rare beer before dinner or lots of food/appetizers

Agreed with gatornation, I love to have a beer before my meal, but I love to have a beer during as well. Get both sides of the story in one sitting!

Nothing better than a massive BBQ and some good beer.

Great Divide usually lists suggested food pairings on thir bottles as well, I believe

Drank more than my fair share of gueuze with Belgian french fries and mussels during my travels over there. Duvel works, too. Awesome pairing, IMO.

I prefer both beer alone and beer with food.

I use unsalted pretzels during tastings. I've also dabbled with cheese and chocolate pairings. Sweet potato yam fries do well with most beers.

I'm not a pilsner fan, but the style goes amazingly well with brownies made from a boxed mix.

Youll find brews you want with food, others not so much, and ones that just do it all.

Fries are a classic pairing, I mean Belgian frites (where us fries originated) and Belgian beer... Just classic particularly moules (mussels).

Experiment around, the fun happens when youre surprised..

Am I in the minority who would rather drink beer by itself 99% of the time vs. with food?

I am probably with you I am in an 80-20 realm though, although some foods just are made for beer, and some beers I feel need food to cut them...

Not at all. I look at it this way, a good beer should stand on its own. But a great meal demands an equally great brew to play off of it.

If you look at a lot of the foods people are mentioning most of them have a higher than normal salt content (especially fries). Salt is known to draw flavor out of many foods/drinks so it is possible that for the people who find that beer is better with fries, for example, mat be experiencing this reaction! Even brownies/chocolates are made with a fair amount of salt so it is possible that it would bring out more flavors in beer!

But it's very difficult to have a cellar full of food.
