Edmonton Beer Geeks Anonymous presents another cask ale centered event for your calendar, this time, with the premise of staving off the cold of a typically frigid time of year. We’re introducing a smaller winter event to keep focus across the seasons and to continue to showcase the skill and products from some amazing local craft brewers.

Freeze Your Cask Off! will be held on Saturday, 21 February 2015 at the Strathcona Community League Hall (10139 87 Ave), in Edmonton from 1pm - 7pm.

If you’ve previously attended our iterations of our EBGA Real Ale Festival, then you’ll have a good idea of what we’re trying to do. This time, however, we’ve posed a challenge to the brewers who will be creating the cask conditioned beers. Given the propensity to gravitate to darker styles, in part, to complement the few short hours of sunlight we experience in Edmonton during the winter months, and in part because they can be of higher ABV to fight off the cold, the brewers have been challenged to create beers that also gravitate to the darker spectrum. At this point we can only speculate as to the styles they will aim for - Porter? Stout? Old Ale? Dark Belgian Strong? Black IPA/Cascadian Dark Ale? - who knows!

In addition to being the first winter cask ale festival put on by the EBGA, we’re also proud to announce a physical embodiment of the partnership that we are developing with the Alberta Small Brewers Association. This particular embodiment happens to take the form of a special (limited) edition growler. The growler is co-funded by EBGA and ASBA, and will be a take-home gift for the patrons of Freeze Your Cask Off!

In line with all EBGA events, we are attempting to make this event both accessible and educational for all those that wish to attend. Patrons will likely have the opportunity to interact with many of the brewers that are creating the cask conditioned beers at the event.

Edmonton Beer Geeks Anonymous is pleased to be working with the following brewers/breweries to produce Freeze Your Cask Off!:
    - Alley Kat Brewing Company
    - Brewsters Brewing Company & Restaurant
    - Dandy Brewing Company
    - Hog’s Head Brewing
    - Norsemen Brewing Co.
    - Ribstone Creek Brewery

This might just be the perfect Christmas gift for the hard-to-buy-for beer geek!

Although I'm not sure how Hogshead is actually going to brew something for this since they are basically dead in the water (my understanding)

They have any plans on not ripping off names/logos from established Colorado breweries?

I'm looking forward to this! I have never been to an EBGA event. I have meant to make a couple of the street car events but never was able to make it. Tomorrow should be great!

It should be a good day. The beers are arriving today at the hall, so they can at least settle a little bit overnight. Looking forward to trying the beers, too; the brewers have done some good stuff for us.

We're hoping to do at least 7 streetcar events this year.

    See ya tomorrow,

    Sid

Freeze Your Cask Off was the first EGBA event I've attended. It was a good afternoon!

6 breweries and 6 casks. My ranking:

    1. Ribstone Creek Smoked Beer
    2. Alley Kat 6 1/2 Bear Oatmeal Export Stout (Bourbon Barrel, Dark Toast Oak, and Orval yeast)
    3. The Dandy Brewing Rauch Beer (Bourbon Barrel and Tonka beans)
    4. Hog's Head Chocolate Stout (with espresso)
    5. Norsemen Brewing Epic Oatmeal Stout (Vanilla and Blackberries)
    6. Brewsters Brewing Howitzer Winter Ale

The top 4 beers were quite close for me. The Dandy Rauch was really interesting and I'm still not quite sure how to describe it - but it was quite good! I'm not a big fan of berries and fruit in beer but even with that the Norsemen stout was pretty good. The only beer that was disappointing was the Brewsters ale that was watery and weak.

A very cool event and it won't be my last EBGA event!

Thanks to all who made it happen!
