This is one of those styles of beers I would love to see make a resurgence. I know it's a hassle to make with freezing and everything but I'm a firm advocate for reviving traditional styles of beer.

Are there any American versions? The only one I've ever come accross was Kulmbacher and Aventinus but it was a weizenbock blend. Are there any other easy to obtain imports as well?

    Thoughts, opinions?

Definitely right there with you. I've had the Kulmbacher, but I would love to see more out there in this style. Hoping a brewery like The Bruery decides to take this on. I have a weird feeling they'd absolutely kill it.

I really like the style. Mammoth Brewing made a good one that they also had a bourbon barrel aged version of. Good stuff

Aventinus Eisbock with a few years on it is a long time favorite of mine. Reminds me a lot of HOTD Adam.

A barrel aged eisbock would be awesome.

Kuhnhenn in Warren, MI has a Raspberry and Blueberry Eisbock they release sometime in the winter and are extremely good, and expensive. I think it was $15 or so for a 12oz bottle.

The Aventinus is a weird one because it's a Weizen. It's easily in my top five favourite beers though and it's completely ruined my glut for exagerrated Belgian quad styles because it has all the flavours and more.

Traditional Eisbock’s are indeed quite a rarity.
L’Alchimiste in Canada also makes a decent one.

Modern style eisbock’s are fun as, well loved Black Damnation Special Kay + De Molen Hel & Verdoemenis Wild Turkey Eisbock.

Didn't the Livery or some other Michigan brewpub do something like a "triple weizen-eisbock" aged in bourbon barrels a few years ago? I mean, it was a brewpub, so it's not like anyone outside Michigan has ever heard of it, but I seem to remember something like that.

True eisbocks (as opposed to the "ice beers" from the US and Canada) are technically illegal to be made in the US - and some of the higher ABV imports (like Brewdog's) are sold under the Distilled Spirits classification of #699 - "OTHER SPECIALTIES & PROPRIETARIES" which means it is taxed and sold like a spirit and not a beer in many states.

The catch is - the TTB doesn't really police it, so there are some US brewed examples but brewers who do it for the most part try to keep it low key (and usually don't ship out of state for obvious reasons).

Though a few years old now, "Joe Sixpack's" blog entry is a good explanation - Ice bock: Frozen out in the U.S.A.

Yes there are American versitions. Those near the top of this list are pretty good.

The problem you'll have finding them is distribution. Most of the breweries that meke them in the US are relatively small and/or don't make them regularly in large batches.

    It happened, BA Aventinus. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/72/98323

I was fortunate to get two bottles and think they will make winter a little warmer this year.

Aventinus Eisbock was one of those beers that wowed me. Kulmbacher Eisbock is good too
