They have started bottling recently, but their shelf-life is horrible. I don't really know the hows and whys, but I don't think their system was ever intended for packaging. Their old retail growlers used to go south after a few weeks and their newer bottles do, too. In general I think they've gone downhill a bit over the last year, even on tap. Hopefully once Bierstadt Lagerhaus (Bill's new project) launches we'll get some of the older Prost flavor profiles once again. If you're looking for authentic old world beers in Denver, Hogshead is the place to go.

I'm a bit confused as to whether Kuhnhenn's Eisbocks are really Eisbocks. The description is:

"After a very very long boil, fresh raspberries and raspberry juice is infused into this intense lager, bringing about fresh berry notes with a hint of chocolate, like a chocolate truffle. "

No mention of fractional freezing (which is illegal in the US anyways). Seems to me more of a fruited barleywine/lager hybrid.

I'd be inclined to agree, based on that. Seems they try to remove water via extended boiling of the wort, rather than fractional freezing of the nearly finished product. It appears to work from an ABV and flavor concentration perspective, while neatly skirting US law, so more power to them, but it does bring the "eis" part into question.

In any event, the likelihood of me ever trying one of theirs approaches zero, just based on price and availability.

My son and I shared an Aventinus Eisbock Barrique aged two years on French Pinot Noir barrels with a wonderful blue cheese on Thanksgiving. This was my favorite dessert. Nearly dead flat and muddy, but delicious with the cheese and very memorable for sure.

It is against US law to remove the frozen water from the beer, but not to remove the beer from the frozen water. Sometimes our fermenters get too cold, know what I'm saying? It's just not something I choose to put in the commercial description or marketing materials.

I was under the impression that the likes of Keystone Ice and Natty Ice were super-light beers that undergo some manner of fractional freezing?

This thread has inspired me to revisit Aventinus Eisbock.

And for that, I thank you.

Call me crazy, but this was as good as a Belgian quad. I'd love to see American brewers take a shot at the style, though the laws and the technique sound like decent hurdles.

Nah, you're not crazy. I'd take one of these any day over a Belgian quad.

You're in Ohio and can't sneak up to grab one, guess my dream of getting one during our yearly pilgrimage to Michigan is shot straight to hell!

Keep hope alive - for all I know, it's available there. I'm just a minimum 6-7 hour drive from the Michigan border courtesy of living 20 minutes from the Ohio River, have no other reasons to hit up Michigan aside from a beercation, and can't really justify either spending over 16 hours in one day on the road or a hotel stay to pick up a single beer.

Thanks, Ohio laws that say any beer over 12% can't be sold in the state.
