I just tried a very fresh can of Other Half's El Dorado single hop IPA and I was not a fan. I spoke with a few other people who had tried it and had similar feelings that it was musty and almost tasted like a stale adjunct lager.

I wanted to see if people had more experience drinking this hop and maybe it was just my taste preferences that made me not a big fan of it or if they just didn't make a great beer.

To be clear, I love OH and very excited that they're making top tier IPAs in New York but this release didn't leave me itching for them to make it again.

I have some on the way and a trade in the works for more after reading solid reviews needless to say I'm disappointed reading this :-/

A friend has a can or two for me. Anxious to try. From reading info on the hop, seems like it would be tasty. Maybe it needs a slight bit of settling/maturing?

I agree. I have a couple 4 packs, not a fan of it. Towards the bottom of the single hop series in my list

I just sent this and an All Green Everything to someone in a trade and added a Finback Oscillation 001 in good faith.

Again, this could have been my taste preference but I've loved all of their IPAs and even their stouts and this beer just wasn't something I wanted more of.

Well like hops they are all dependent on how they are used..

However, single hop brews can give you an idea.

I actually like El Dorado, Flying Dog made a solid one as part of their single hop series

FWIW, I just had Trillium's DDH Sleeper Street, which is El Dorado + Columbus as the bittering hop. I normally quite enjoy Trillium's stuff, but I far and away enjoyed Sleeper the least of all their stuff I've had.

I've had the same problem as BeerKarmaNYC. I picked up some El Dorado last weekend at the release and it does taste like cheesy hops. Somewhat disappointed because I am a big OH fan.

If you're expecting AGE or GD -- or even Mosaic, for that matter -- you're going to be disappointed. This is a way more subtle, way more delicate beer. It's very balanced, more along the lines of MBC's "A Tiny Beautiful Something." I thought it was excellent, right up there with the other OH single hop beers.

Thanks. That was kind of what I expected to hear. At the end of the day when we start seeing single hop, specific malt and yeast beers there will end up being varieties that some people just don't like or get.

Of all their beers I would drink Hops Showers and Mosaic over anything else.

The first thing I thought about after tasting it was that my reaction was similar to everyone who was hating on all the good Goses that got so popular this summer.

I've yet to try anything from Other Half but I recall both Voodoo El Dorado Pale Ale and Flying Dog El Dorado IIPA both being kind of terrible.
Voodoo makes excellent beer all around and I think FD's single hop Double IPA series was pretty good (but too boozy) in years past but is damn near killing it in 2015. Just had the Columbus yesterday and I was impressed.

So I absolutely agree with you that there seems to be something rotten with El Dorado.

El Dorado is one of favorite hops.Sleeper St. from Trillium is amazing and the DDH Sleeper St. Is my favorite IPA. An honorable mention goes out to Maine Beer's A Tiny Beautiful Something. I haven't had the OH El Dorado yet, but am excited to try one.

Everyone's olfactory sensors are different...It's simple genetics.

El Dorado is good in my book.

I think El Dorado is fantastic. Its got a good amount of earthiness and doesnt taste like fruit juice. I'm getting sick of the fruit juice crave. If you want fruit juice, go to a diner.

I like bitterness and El Dorado provides just that.

I had a can from the recent release just two days ago. I found it to have a lot of melon-centric flavor, it also had some vegetable notes as well. Found it to be pretty straight-forward and simple beer which is exactly what one is expecting with a single hop. Didn't find it to be musty or taste like an adjunct lager. All in all I thought it was a decent beer but it doesn’t meet up to the incredibly high standards that Other Half has set. I'd still buy it, but there are others I'd reach for first.

I am getting actually quite tired of the ridiculous pineapple tropical fruit juice et. all bomb trend of late as well, I would like a beer not a glass of Tropicana.

I'm not a huge fan of el dorado personally, but that's just me. I do love what OH is doing with the single hop series generally though, as isolating the hops is a great way to learn about certain hops and what they impart on a beer.

As an aside, I find it quite funny when people continuously shit on "the juicy IPA craze" but then love coffee stouts or coffee porters, or any adjunct beer for that matter. if you like coffee so much...it can be found in that same diner

Ethan, how would you describe the flavor profile of Flying Dog El Dorado beer?

    Cheers!

Ethan, if you are looking for something ‘different’ I would recommend Sixpoint Sensi and Victory Harvest Ale to you.

    Cheers!
