El Segundo Brewing Co. | El Segundo, CA Come Original IPA | 7% | 16 oz can This collaboration with the band 311 is dark straw colored beer that is brilliantly clear with impressive white foam and lacing. The flavors are tropical driven with notes of mango and lychee. Candy-like attributes such as strawberry fruit rollup and Smartees are all mixed up. Moderate bitterness balances the sweeter fruit characteristics, and the beer finishes clean and dry with a subtle white bread nuance. Hops: Simcoe, Mosaic, Chinook, Malt: Weyermann pilsner, Rahr 2-Row, flaked wheat. ...and don't forget to drop this beer a rating and review (click the beer name)!
Clear body appearance, fragrant aroma, and a good balance in the taste between sweet and bitter. Unlike other beers sourced from the WCIPA BOX, this one has a later flavor addition of candy hops which works well with the berry (strawberry) flavor. Long lasting bitterness, but not a palate wrecker. Very enjoyable.
4.24/5 rDev +0.2% look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25 A: Pours a relatively clear pale golden yellow in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass and moderate bright yellow + straw yellow colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall dense sudsy foamy bright white head that reduces to a handful of small to medium sized patch of medium thick film surrounded by a large patch of very slightly mottled very thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed. S: Slightly stronger than moderate aromas of citrus/orange + tropical/mango + dank pine/resin hops over the top of light to moderate aromas of biscuit + pale + lightly toasted + grainy malts with a light amount of grainy sweetness. T: Upfront there are light to moderate flavors of biscuit + pale + lightly toasted + grainy malts with a light amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by moderate to strong flavors of citrus/orange + tropical/mango + dank pine/resin hops which impart a moderate amount of aggressive lingering bitterness. M: Just shy of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp with a moderately dry finish. O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a pleasantly refreshing crisp + dry mouthfeel. Very enjoyable with tropical + citrus + dank pine hops and aggressive lingering bitterness.
El Segundo: Come Original Appearance (Look) – Golden with a bit of haze. Soapy white head. Aroma (Smell) – Grassy and musty. Lemon and grapefruit. Taste – Piney with lemon pith. Mouthfeel (Feel) – Medium with low carbonation. Overall – Piney and refreshing. Lingering piney bitterness that could be nice when you want that.
IPA #5 from the box. No doubt about this one being West Coast-style Floral, citrus, and resin notes over light caramel malt. Well-carbonated to boot. I dig it and would be 'down' to have it again (sorry, couldn't resist ) Cheers
Wow, this is the poster child for a classic WCIPA, at least to me. The hop bitterness is just at the right level for this style and is balanced with nice berry notes. It is beers like this that make the Beer Advocate boxes well worth it!
