I was at the store the other day and noticed that they had Sculpin for the first time! "Yes!" I thought to myself, until I looked at the price tag. Then I went on with my life as though it never happened because I am unwilling to pay 17 bucks for a six of anything.

I know Sculpin is supposed to be great, but I simply can't bring myself to pay that for it, which makes no sense because I'll drop 5 bucks on a bottle of Pliny or a can of Heady any day. Am I crazy? Does anyone else behave irrationally about these things?

Not crazy, but you do provide a perfect illustration of why, as prices rise on certain beers, many breweries move to 4 packs and away from 6 packs.

You pay $5.00 for one bottle, but will not pay $17.00 for 6 bottles. Yes that is irrational, and then some.

Just break it down. 17/6 is $2.83. Would you spend that much at a restaurant for a beer or at a sporting event. I've become very good at rationalizing my bad spending habits lol.

How is it embarrassing to pay for something you don't feel like forking money over for.

If you don't want it... you don't want it...

    Cheers!

Congratulations on not buying the Sculpin!

Your next mission (if you choose to accept it) is to stop paying 5 bucks for a single bottle of other beers.

    Cheers!

I understand. I have the same irrational reasons for buying or not buying certain beers. It's so often about price and packaging. And some beers I may never try because I can't justify spending $20 on a bottle I will drink by myself; but then Oude Tart gets released again, and I jump all over it at $19.99. I used to pay $7.99 or $8.99 for Green Flash West Coast sixers. Then they switched to 4-packs and the price didn't change (in some places it went up). I swore I would never buy it again. Meanwhile I had been happily paying $5.99 for bombers of GF Double Stout, and then that beer started getting packaged in 4-packs for only a few dollars more. And I felt like I was getting a steal. So who knows.....

But definitely buy that Sculpin if it's fresh. Cheers!

Since it is said Sculpin is "supposed to be great", buy one bottle of Sculpin and give it a try. I think it is worth a bottle from time to time. I wish I could buy one bottle (or can) of Heady or Pliny. I paid 10 bucks for a single of World Wide Stout, and 25 bucks for 16.9 oz of BA Old Stock. I won't even bring up Hunahpu. Were they worth it? Doesn't matter what I think. Pick and choose. It's your money and tastes. Cheers!

I'm very irrational when it comes to buying beer, though I'm still a little new and I get a bit too excited about ridiculous things sometimes, such as a hyped beer or a cool label or any chili beer.

One second I'll be buying a $20 four-pack, the next second I'll end up looking for a $10 six-pack.... I try to keep it balanced, but being somewhat of a noob I'm a little schizoid about my choices.

Meh, $17 for a six pack of Sculpin equates to paying $0.24 per ounce. Whereas spending $5.00 for a can of heady or bottle of Pliny equates to paying $0.31 per ounce. Those differences will add up if purchasing in bulk, but if you lack access to any of the above than you are only splitting that difference every once in a while. Given the reputation of Pliny and Heady, paying the extra 7 cents per ounce isn't irrational IMO. I also don't think Sculpin is that great. Ballast Point's somewhat nearby neighbor Saint Archer makes a much better 12oz canned IPA IMO.

Jeeze that's expensive for Sculpin. The $14.99 price tag here has deterred me from trying it for years.

I don't think the cost per ounce figures into beer pricing very well. It all comes down to how much we want to be able to drink a certain beer. I don't think any of us figure in driving 2 or 3 hours to get a certain beer and how much that adds to the cost. Or how about having to buy the girl friend dinner because she went with us because the was a per person limit and she doesn't even drink beer. IMO Sculpin is just a so-so IPA so save your money on that and take your girlfriend out to dinner the results will be better.

I find with certain brands the price hits a point and then I stop buying it and the price keeps going up and then when it goes down a little I end up buying it for much more than I would have paid in the first place.

No need to break everything down per ounce.

In my book, Pliny and Heady are completely worth $5 each and Sculpin is not worth $17 for a six pack.

Sounds like the OP wasn't anyplace you can buy singles; if he paid $5 for a 16 oz. Heady [.31/oz.] or a 16.9 oz. Pliny [.295/oz.], even if a single Sculpin was $3.60/12 oz., the per oz. would be comparable at .30/oz. It just doesn't feel like you're paying as much when you buy a single. Personally, if it was something I wanted to try, it wouldn't matter much as long as I wasn't being totally ripped off. And $5 for a 16 oz. can of Heady or a 500 ml of Pliny is quite reasonable IMO.

Believe it or not, I didn't see your post before breaking it down by the ounce.

17 dollars for a six pack is considered absolutely unreasonable? Even for special occasion or 'want' beers? Mainly the six or four packs I normally get are priced around 8.99 to 10.99. I admit, I've avoided purchasing Devil Dancer by Founders due to price point, but I haven't completely ruled it out based on that. I guess it all depends on the person, but I think it's worth the jump here and there to try out something worth while.

And if we're going by ounces, I find it easier to sleep at night just going by the bottle. 17 bucks on a sixer is less than three dollars per bottle, a much better price than a draft or bottle at a local tap house. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
