I would not call t embarrassing, but I can see how the logic is flawed. However, it is always easier to put down the price for a single than it is for an entire pack, especially if you don't know what you are getting.

Ironically, I had my first Sculpin last night. And while I thought it was a solid, enjoyably drinkable 7% IPA (tasted like an stronger All Day to me), I wouldn't buy it again, even if I could, (not distributed to MI) because it is not worth twice the price of Two Hearted.

I just dont think its woth it for the beer. I like BP but 17$ for a year round 6 of decent IPA is just to much. I dont care about the per ounce price. I generally look at things as a whole. But thats just me.

I just think there are too many breweries opening for this to ever happen. I think the craft bubble is more price centered than brewery centered. Eventually some breweries will just cost to much and the will be replaced in my fridge. There will always be someone making a comparable product cheaper. Look at born yesterday from lagunitas, IMO better than pliny and $8.99 a 6 pack.

Everyone needs to pay attention to this nugget of enlightenment. You cannot compare bar price to liquore store price. I know personnally I am much more willing to occasionally buy a 7$ pint of sculpinm however will never buy at the store.

My OCD nature manifest itself in very peculiar ways at times. The OP's conundrum represents one of those times. If I am not MENTALLY prepared to spend "X" amount on something at that very time, than I would be in the same boat. Yes, it's irrational from a pure economics standpoint, but if I don't particularly feel like parting with $17 but parting with $5 isn't triggering a fidgety response, than I'm all good. And this comes from someone that was mentally prepared to randomly buy a $26 bottle of BA Old Raspy. I don't know exactly what makes me insane, but coping with it makes life all the more fun......

I would buy it more if they didn't use Julian dating. I think it's misleading to people who don't know or have time to figure out what the dating means. If they would man up and put an easy to read bottle date I would buy more. Also don't like them using enjoy by dates. I want bottle dates, let me decide when to enjoy it by. 120 days can be too much for some brews.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I meant to draw attention to my own inconsistencies (and probably many other people's inconsistencies) about what I'm willing to pay, rather than gripe about Sculpin's price point. As I've gotten more into homebrewing, and as other amazing things have become more available (like Sucks!) I have a hard time shelling out a lot of money on any beer that hasn't seen a barrel and/or some Brett.

Agreed. Lagunitas is an excellent brewery and its beers are reasonably priced.

I've almost given up on trying to rationalize my beer vs beer choices, but I will sometimes catch myself questioning beer choices vs. real-life things. Like when I push to keep the heat below a certain temperature in the house to save $10/month while my wife tacks on layer after layer, but I'll buy a few bombers at $8-12 apiece without thinking about it nearly as much.

I assume she's cold anyway, I dunno, sometimes it's hard to hear "I'm cold" over the sounds of a "crying child" who "needs food", but I usually just try to warm up with another bottle of Utopia and forget about it.

I'd say you have bigger problems in life then expensive beer if you can't even tell your wife you spent 17 dollars on a six pack of beer.

I spent 62 dollars today for two Modern Times BA stout 22 ounce bottles. After I did it I thought about it and thought what is my problem. I'm sure the beer will be great but feeling lucky to spend $1.50 an ounce for a beer that I have never tried before made me at least ponder my action. But I suppose that's why I work hard

    $17 > $5

What is so irrational about that?

I see everyone making the $/oz argument, and that works perfectly well and fine when comparing items whose total costs, or total fluid ounces are similar, but $17 vs $5 is a big difference. If I just want to 'try' a beer, I am not going to pay a $12 premium, even if I get an additional 56 ounces.
