I will be visiting England in September and am looking to find the best beer spots in each city.

Will be flying into Gatwick Airport. May actually need to kill some time here, so any places of interest other than JDWs?

Then visiting Birmingham and Nottingham for a couple days, then onto Cornwall (specifically Falmouth and Truro), then to my birthplace, Brighton.

I am actually from the UK, visiting family, hence the somewhat unusual destinations!

Nottingham is an amazing place for beer and can claim to be one of the best destinations for it in the UK.Pity you won't be there in October as the world's biggest cask ale festival takes place then.

    I love Cornwall
Falmouth is beautiful but I've not drank their in years just under 15 miles on from there is Helston
    and the Blue Anchor
    • Blue Anchor Inn
    • Address: 50 Coinagehall St, Helston TR13 8EL
      Phone:01326 562821

which is an absolute must for the area
great beer, good pasties and historically it is a very old brewing outfit

Will try and get a better view of Falmouth & Truro specifics from trusted sources.

    Sorry had to check
but the Seven Stars in Falmouth is still worth a visit
(fondly remembered from when beer in Cornwall was generally mainly very badly kept Courage)

Damn! I miss those guys. Unfortunately for bunches of modern beer advocatos, that humor is a bit "subtle".

When I visited Falmouth for the first time a few months ago I was impressed by Beer Wolf, the Seven Stars and the Grapes (if I remember the name correctly). There are also a few other pubs that are worth a visit in the town as well. All in all, I considered it a pretty good drinking destination.

On the way to Falmouth, when passing through Devon, if you have the time, there is a pretty good specialist craft beer bar that has opened recently in Newton Abbot called Teign Cellars. Also, towards the end of September, just outside of Newton Abbot, there is a quite a good independent beer festival called Abbfest.

As for Brighton, I would concur with the Evening Star as a must-do, but I would also suggest (although I haven't been to Brighton for a couple of years), the Basketmakers Arms and the Lord Nelson. I have also heard good reports of a new craft beer bar there, but I haven't yet visited it myself.

You could try the What Pub website as a starting place for more detail about the pubs in the various towns.

The Beacon Hotel is pretty good, too. And Ma Pardoes.

Still haven't made it back unfortunately, hopefully early next year. Will actually be heading to Leamington Spa instead of Birmingham.
