Newcastle is the English brown ale I first tasted and enjoy on an occasional basis. Looking for any recommendations on similar brown ales I could try.

    Thanks John

One of my fav English Browns is Maduro from Cigar City. Not sure you get that up in MA but Ellie's from Avery is a really great American Brown that is widely available. Good luck find one you love.

Newburgh Brown Ale - not too hoppy, not imperial, no added adjuncts - just a really good brown.

An EBA I really enjoyed, although, a bit of a novelty, is, The Dudes: Grandma's Pecan. Drink it cold. It's like dessert in a glass.

Being in Massachusetts, Smuttynose Old Brown Dog is the obvious go-to.

One of the first beers I loved, and a college staple for me. I really need to revisit it...

Not an English Brown, but I recently tried Lakefront My Turn Mike Imperial Brown Ale, and it is outstanding. This is a limited run, but is on shelves now, and should be available in Massachusetts for the OP.

My folks gave me a credit card to use for groceries (my loan wouldn't cover them), so I'd buy some groceries for one of my roommates/bandmates, and he'd reciprocate with beer. It was a nice system we had...

But I mean, there was also the odd case of Genny Cream Ale too, or PBR.

Nice. I did not have this luxury but I did steal Genny Cream from the old man when I was home. There also was no such thing as Smuttynose when I went to college. Sam's, Anchor and Pete's Wicked maybe but that was it. Cheers mate.

There was a pretty comprehensive Brown Ale thread not too long ago if you want to search for it.
A lot of these suggestions are not traditional Brown Ales - so probably not what you are looking for. Aside from Newburgh Brown - Brooklyn Brown is a proper brown ale too. Haven't had the Smuttynose and I like their beers so I'm going to look out for it but its sounds hoppier than an English Brown.

Samuel Smiths nut brown ale is good. I will try all the others highly regarded here.

It's not a brown ale per se but Firestone-Walker's DBA is a nice beer with similar characteristics. I bet you'd enjoy it if you haven't tried yet. If you can find the Unfiltered version, even better (it uses 100% Burton barre aged Ale as opposed to a blend like regular DBA)

Seeing youre from MA, if you're looking for the real deal on cask I highly recommend NERAX next week: http://nerax.org/wp_nerax/nerax/. Bound to be several English browns throughout the week.

Same boat, don't forget Sierra Nevada! Those were basically the four "fancy" options when we had enough pocket money to upgrade from High Life

Forgot but did drink it. It was such a weird time being a craft brew drinker before that was a thing. I'd love to have a Pete's Wicked once more.

Pete's is missed. One great beer.

If you can buy it try The Dude's Grandma's Pecan, Bell's Best Brown Ale and Lost Coast Downtown Brown.
