Why bother ? This country is awash with DIPA's and the price tag is stinks of "super duper rare so I must buy it" I could understand the approach for a decent Impy Stout or Quad, but for an IPA, not worth it at all.

When I lived next to the Stone Company Store in Pasadena, I remember filling my 2L growler for about $18. I remember it being such a great beer, especially the Enjoy By 09.13.13. At first, each Enjoy By release hit only a select number of US states. Subsequent releases required lottery systems for other states to be included in the distro. To my memory, once distro hit the entire domestic US, post 09.13.13 I believe, batch sizes grew and quality subsequently declined. This was one of Stone's best offerings, aside from its 2012-present IRS.

However, at $38/btl per Slowbeer, I find it a bit steep even taking into account Australia's ridiculous taxation and price markup on beer. If you haven't had it before, I encourage you to try it and enjoy it. In all honesty, you could find equal if not fresher/better offerings locally at a lower price point. Do yourself a favor by spending that money on some Hop Hog.

I don't think style is relevant (personally). But I'm one of the idiots who bought the stuff so what do I know?

Considering the depths plumbed by Innspire et al a few years back (e.g. $40 for 500mL Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch Weasel) $38 a bomber is not especially outrageous.

In all honesty I probably would have bought a (one) bottle had I not had previous batches.

I'm afraid the style is very relevant if not drinking fresh.

An Impy stout can withstand all sorts, whereby hop driven beers such as DIPA's need refrigerating and to be drunk fresh to get the best experience. They seriously decline over a short time, especially when not refrigerated. For some reason when in a can they hold up much better. This one is not in a can and I can think of a multitude of beers to spend money on, with a better experience

So, stores involved in this Stone Program should be getting beer that is cold stored from beginning to the (hopefully cold) shops. But, no explanation of how far the cold storage had been explained (to me anyway). I assume it will all be air freighted to Melbourne, them cold transported to wherever in Australia. Any less is unacceptable. Personally, I will be treating this as a promo and not a price gauge, keeping the price very close to cost - full mark up would be $40. I will try to aim for $30 (boss permitting!!).

There is a big Stone Cornerstone Program that will have a large volume of stone coming in (BA Arrogant etc).

This will be interesting to see, price will be up, but quality should be up too.

On a side note - with Stone awash and readily available, would sales be strong enough for constant large supply?

I was assuming equal freshness, but that doesn't make sense seeing as certain styles degrade far quicker than others. Point taken . Interesting question, would highly sought after stouts and/or quads be a similar price to their current value if they were incredibly fresh?

With regards to cold freight, email from BeerCartel:

"With all beers, either brewed in Australia or imported from overseas freight transit is a mix of cold storage, climate controlled or ambient. Door to door cold freighting, especially with international beers, is cost prohibitive.

A large part of the retail price for the Enjoy By IPA is the speed of transit (being air freighted days after bottling) so that the beer can be purchased and drunk within the suggested “enjoy by” date."

At this price point I don't believe the demand would be enough in the medium-long term to have a constant supply from Stone.

Another interesting issue is whether Stone will maintain their current BB dates or adopt special "Australian market" ones as other brewers have done. Apparently hops fade slower in the Southern Hemisphere.

Good question. As I understand it - and you will be in a better position than I - top selling beers are never-drunk-before beers or first import beers. Second and subsequent import batches sit on shelves....

Yep - the way I like it  A 20km perimeter rule should be imposed on IPAs

Is this $40 for a bomber or stubbie?
