Erlenmeyer flask broke while heating: WTF?

    For some reason after reading this thread I felt like I was the only one who did this rather than placing the flask directly on the stove.

    I do exactly what AlCaponeJr does. Works great for me also. I drilled a small hole in the lid for a small dial-type probe thermometer so that I can continuously monitor the temperature as it heats up and then cools down.

    I use my flasks on a glass top electric. Haven't had any issues in the 1.5 years I have lived in my house. Only have 1 broken flask. I had it on the stove top dry, and then put it into the cold porcelain sink and it cracked. Don't remember why I did this. The glass is kind of thin looking too.

    Walter H. White: Volumetric flask is for general mixing and titration. You wouldn't apply heat to a volumetric flask. That's what a boiling flask is for. Did you learn nothing from my chemistry class?

    Post 13 above. Nice quotes in your post.

    Erlenmeyer flasks have the transitions from the bottom to side that cause stress risers, glass will suffer from cumulative damage over heating cycles. The boiling flask will not have the stress risers due to the continuous radius.
