I need to brew an ESB which will be gravity poured from a cask and it needs to be ready in 6 weeks. Since the beer has a short-fuse, I kept the OG @ the lower end of ESBs. Anyone see anything that could present a problem or should be tweaked? 7.00 lb Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM) Grain 79.10 % 0.75 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM) Grain 8.47 % 0.40 lb Barley, Flaked (1.7 SRM) Grain 4.52 % 0.20 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt -120L (120.0 SRM) Grain 2.26 % 1.80 oz Goldings, East Kent [5.00 %] (60 min) Hops 29.9 IBU 0.35 oz Fuggles [4.50 %] (20 min) Hops 3.2 IBU 0.35 oz Goldings, East Kent [5.00 %] (20 min) Hops 3.5 IBU 0.25 oz Goldings, East Kent [5.00 %] (20 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops - 0.25 oz Fuggles [4.50 %] (0 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops - 0.50 lb Cane (Beet) Sugar (0.0 SRM) Sugar 5.65 % 1 Pkgs British Ale (White Labs #WLP005) Yeast-Ale Est Original Gravity: 1.050 SG Measured Original Gravity: 1.010 SG Est Final Gravity: 1.014 SG Measured Final Gravity: 1.005 SG Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 4.65 % Actual Alcohol by Vol: 0.65 % Bitterness: 36.6 IBU Calories: 43 cal/pint Est Color: 10.2 SRM Color: Single Infusion Mash @152 Ferment @ 68, open primary for peak fermentation
“ …will be gravity poured from a cask and it needs to be ready in 6 weeks.” You should have absolutely no difficulty meeting that timeframe. I make a 1.050 Bitter Ale that is in good drinking condition at the end of week 5 and I dry hop for two weeks and bottle condition. Good luck with your ESB. Cheers!
I think you meant to put the FG at 1.010 vs the measured OG hehe. This recipe will be fine in 6 weeks. I have turned them around in 2 weeks or less. I like a little pilsener malt in my ESB's, maybe about 25% of the base malt. Really like the flavor it gives when you mix up the base malt bill a little. Also, boil the fuck out of it. I boil my ESB's for 120 minutes and boil hard. It's all about the Maillard reactions with these beers.
6 weeks is plenty of time, especially considering you are pouring from a cask. Looks like a great recipe to me, I would drink it!
None that I can see, but at that point arent you moving closer to an English IPA rather than an ESB? Not sure if that is an issue.
Holy shit. Your avatar....That's a sight I haven't seen in a long, long time. 1-505 Oh, and to make this relevant so it doesn't get deleted: I homebrew and that looks like a solid recipe.
