I recently posted an ISO:FT thread that generated a fair amount of interest. I had a few things I was looking for, all of them were not equal wants, and Ideally I wanted to wait for my top want...even though it probably has less perceived "value" then some of the others.

    My question is this...

When dealing with a crowded inbox, how do you respond to people? I didn't want to say I wasn't interested, because I was...I didn't want to negotiate with them because I wanted to wait and see if my top want came through...and I didn't want to ignore them because a few of them were sending my lots of messages, asking for a response either way. When I tried to tell them that I was waiting to see if I can work something else out, they just kept sending other offers as if I wanted more, I didn't want more, I wanted something different. I eventually made a deal for my top want, and I felt bad because I had a feeling those people trying to negotiate with me felt jilted.

How should I have handles this?

I would just tell them you were looking for a certain top want. Or next time include that X beer has to be in the trade.

It didn't have to be in the trade. My inbox exploded instantly, and I just wanted to wait and see if someone was going to offer my top want before I made a deal.

I did tell them that, and that's when it turned into an auction, they kept offering more...which I try to avoid.

I did end up getting my top want. Which was significantly less $4$, ounces, beer units, then some of the other offers.

I actually just dealt with this, from the other side, and it is pretty frustrating. In my opinion, if you have 1 bottle you want way more than the rest, make the ISO just for that bottle first. Maybe include that you would like to expand with the rest. When you say ISO a bunch of beers, and then turn down tons of offers, including multiple bottles in the ISO, it looks like an auction. Start with the one you want. If that doesn't work, open it up to the others.

I would have gladly taken any of the bottles in my ISO list. But I wanted to wait an hour to see what was offered. I had 20 offers within 5 minutes. I've never dealt with that.

Yeah that's were it becomes auction-ish. If you are searching through offers when you are looking for a certain beer. When you should have just clarified in the isoft that you were hoping for a certain beer.

Is that how trading is done now? I thought it was ISO: X FT: Y, and the person who offers me Y is who gets X.

If you are so bold to say that you are waiting for the best offer or your highest want, why not just be so bold with the people who you potentially are trading with and just tell them, "Hey, that's great, but I really want this instead." See how that works out, maybe that person has the bottle you actually 'want', maybe not, if they don't you weren't going to trade with them anyways.

Then again, maybe I read your whole concept above incorrectly.

Otherwise you should have taken the first offer that included what you posted iso even if it didn't include the certain beer that you didn't clarify should be included. Just my opinion.

so what I should have done is post FT: X ISO: Y...then post again in 30min. FT: X ISO: A or B.

Because Y was more of a want then A or B.

And when I tell someone "Sorry, give me some time to see if someone offers Y" and they say "But I'll give you A and f and z" that's an auction...even if I was upfront with them.

Not as long as you were upfront with them about Y. After that it's just them being butthurt that you didn't like their offer.

I think there's a fair amount of butthurt over this beer at the moment. So that might have something to do with it.

If they ask I tell them I'm shipping mustard barbecue sauce to friends who love it but can't get it locally.

Was said mustard a limited 300 bottle release in California? Best I can offer is greatest the Midwest has to offer, French's.

Inbox explosions tend to happen pretty quickly and then fall off drastically after a couple of hours. I tend to just wait for the initial rush to die down, then go through them. The first offer that hits the mark and doesn't seem like an ass usually gets the deal. If nobody quite hit it, I'll go back to the 2-3 closest and see if we can expand a bit to get it there. If everybody is way off (usually looking for a specific bottle only) I'll just wait.

I don't respond to everybody. If it's a ton of people I'll just post "this is closed, sorry I couldn't get back to everyone" in the ISO/FT. If it's a smaller group, I'll respond to the people who at least made an attempt at writing the English language and didn't lowball me.
