Surly Furious is the beer that whelms me when needed. Others work, but I know where to go when it is needed.

All the time. Solid but not awe inspiring beers whelm me. Elm City Pilsner is an example of this for me. Solid, drinkable, and refreshing.

New Dogtown Pale, too. I feel unadventurous when I grab the sixer, but when I start consuming my brain says "Good job for not fucking this one up."

I love seeing "firsts" like this, where OP should just retire/close the thread and get it stickied.

I would have to say that most of the beers I drink "whelm" me. I don't generally buy beers if they have consistently poor reviews (don't have enough time or money to tick them all myself, otherwise I would), so i have reasonably high expectations for most of the stuff I drink. Usually, they come somewhere close to delivering on those expectations, and only rarely exceed them. Ergo, whelmed.

Sweetwater IPA & Cigar City Jose Marti fit that catagory for me. Both good stuff that I don't find myself drinking often "enough".

Average Harpoon IPA...super fresh, it is outstanding. A bit of age, not so much...but finding Harpoon IPA on tap locally hits the spot most times.

First that came to mind is Founder's Breakfast Stout. Undeniably a hugely appreciable beer, but with so many stouts that are bigger and badder (including several in the Founder's family) it just fills my mouth with a comfortable "yup," instead of the "damn!" that I've grown accustomed to with MI-brewed stouts in particular.
