At a family party, we happened to have Miller Light, Bud Lite, and Coors Light. There were six lite beer drinkers, who insisted they knew the differences and they each had a favorite. Only one of them guessed all 3 correctly. The other 5 even got their favorites wrong. Statistically, I think the chances of guessing correctly are 1/6. If you ever get the chance, try it at the next 4th of july or Super Bowl. Its a fun ego-buster.
Did a blind tasting of DIPA's last week with three friends. Our results: 5. Half Acre Double Daisy Cutter 4. Alchemist Heady Topper 3. Russian River Pliny the Elder 2. Revolution Double Fist 1. Firestone Walker Double Jack Looking forward to blinding gueuzes from Cantillon, Drie Fonteinen, and Tilquin in the near future...
Sounds fun. I think I could pick out Coors Light, but after I tasted one beer I think the other two would taste the same.
We did this at our last Super Bowl party. My friend urinated in one of the samples, and strangely (or not), that particular sample was picked more than the other two. He told the samplers about it well after the tasting, and nobody believed him.
I've done a few. Once my brother-in-law and I did one with Hopslam and Double Trouble. We both guessed wrong AND both thought the one that turned out to be Double Trouble tasted better.
I've done the BMC challenge but forget the results, that was a long long time ago. Last night I impressed myself. We did a blind test of 75 min, Mongo, Sucks, Flower power, Ruination, and Alchemy Hour. They all have specific characteristics so it was pretty easy. I went 6/6 and my buddy went 3/6. I was surprised I ot em all right. The rating went: Sucks------Flower Power---Alchemy-Ruination-75min--------Mongo. -means how much better
