not when someone's buying BMC or something no.

sometimes i've tried to urge people from one craft beer toward another better/cheaper alternative (my opinion, of course). can't think of specific examples.

also, it's usually less dissuade, and more "oh, if you like that you should try this!"

    ---

to put it another way, if someone was like, "i need a big thick stout, I'LL HAVE A GUINNESS!" i might try to steer them toward something more along the lines of what they described. or, if someone expresses that a beer is too something (bitter, fruity, etc) and they say they're going to try X instead, which is more that-same-something than the one they're getting away from, i'll try to dissuade them.

other than that, i don't give a shit.

I don't offer advise unless asked. But when asked, I do try to be helpful. (The guyes at the local liquor store are expanding into high alc. brews, and they ask for suggestions every time I walk in.) I'm stoked that they remember that I was among the first to:a. Come when they started carring them; and b. THINK I know about these beers!

Only to friends if I know they will not like something...I have a buddy who cannot stand bitter hops..If I am with him and think something is too hoppy I say something--but I would not do that unsolicited for people I do not know yet.

I never say anything, but i have been asked my opinion while i was searching for something to buy. Usually i try to find out what they have had and liked, and just suggest something similar that is local.

I suggest locals or something not too extreme, unless they ask for Bud, then fuggeddaboutit. A co-worker looked aghast in horror when I told him I paid over $10 for x. He calculated how much Bud light he could have gotten. That discussion really didn't win any converts to the craft beer section.

Not unless a friend is about to grab a beer I know they won't like.

Honey badger don't give a shit.

Anyway, I've never talked to randoms in a beer store and probably never will, unless asked, or if it's obvious they need help figuring something out. If they want to see what craft is about, they can google it and lurk on BeerAdvocate a little.

I have told everyone I know to not try Left Hands Barrel Aged Wake Up Dead or New Belgium Super Cru. If I haven't told YOU yet, DON'T DO IT!

I tried suggesting some Boris to a guy talking to a clerk about stouts. He blew me off, but who gives two craps? Throw your opinion out there if you want. However, Ive gotten the "holy crap, I can buy a whole case of Budweiser for that price" look enough to know most people dont want advice.

When anyone asks me about Crazy Ed's Cave Creek Chili Beer (which is often) at work, I always say the same thing "It is very hot", I really don't want them to buy it but their curiosity gets the better of them and they usually end up buying a single (It's only like $1.19 though).

I never dissuade someone from drinking whatever they want. I'm always willing to offer my opinion if asked, though.

Besides beer, I think we have something in common but I can't put my finger on it.

I usually don't offer advice unless someone asks for it. However, I will never understand why some people, who claim to like beer, drink the same thing time after time, and refuse to try something new. It's kind of like ordering a cheeseburger every time you go out to eat !

at a local beer bar i heard some dudes talking about what to order. 2 ordered a pliny and one went for a mead... they had no idea what it was but "oh those are good!" so i lean over and say "you are really ordering a mead right now, you sure you want that? its super sweet..." hes like "oh yeah im good"

sure enough one sip later and he admits i was right and wished he had listened to me  i always interject when i hear unsure people and the bartender isnt paying attention to them. im good at steering people in the right direction and usually in a super friendly/informative way not like "oh that shit is HOPPY stay away" i just like matching people with delicious beers!

I have only tried to dissuade a pushy drunk friend from dissuading a stranger from buying a certain beer, but I was dissuaded by the Big Owmbo. Dissuaception. I tend to be non-confrontational and telling people what beer to drink is the last thing on my list of things to do while I am enjoying beers.
