It seems like ever since Schlitz Gusto Original 60's Formula hit the market many other long time mass marketed (national and regional) brewery/beer company's have jumped on the bandwagon.

I recently purchased retro packaged beer from Coor's, Busch, Genesee, Rheingold and Rolling Rock some of which may be attempting to re-create a beer (original recipe) that was popular in a time gone by.

While I dig the retro packaging, the beer is still full of adjuncts and lacking much (if any) flavor.

I'll buy them for the packaging and drink (some, most, all) of the beer.

I'm a beer drinker and while I prefer a well crafted beer, I'll drink almost any beer.

Have you or will you purchase any "retro" packaged/brewed beer and if so, what did you think?

I've occasionally bought some NY beers because of their retro ties--most recently Genny Bock, which I liked. But I generally don't swing for most such offerings. Not that I wouldn't drink them, but I end up finding other things to buy at the beer store...

On a retro note, cans of Ballantine Ale have disappeared around here in the past year. That was definitely my favorite retro beer.

I gotta say bro... I won't. If I'm gonna spend $10- 15... I'd rather just buy something I like, or something I think I'd like. Life is too short for shitty beer!

I bought a few of the genesee sampler packs they released last summer. Pretty damn decent, especially given its $7.99/12 pack price. Four styles in the retro style stub bottles.

I cut my teeth on an Olympia habit. I would stockpile an original batch of that and if the cans approximated the old ones I would keep them to insulate my armegeddon shelter.

I can still get 12oz and "pounder" cans of Ballantine XXX Ale as well as 12oz, 22oz and 40oz bottles.
I like the Genny Bock myself but that retro can has been around for a few years, I'm talking about the most recent trend in retro beer packaging.

    Cheers!

i used to buy utica club because i'd rather buy crappy NY beer than crappy beer from elsewhere.. but honestly i don't even touch that stuff anymore, there are better options in most places. even my local bar, which barely serves craft, manages to get ithaca cascazilla on tap, which is just as drinkable as any of the macro beers.

This thread is not about drinking crappy beer it's about the retro packaging of crappy beer...

The old school packaging is why I buy it.

I don't buy it for the contents, but I'll at least try the beer.

    Cheers!

Thread seems really off topic so far. To respond to the thread have never seen this happening.

Solely because of the novelty of it, I recently bought a single can of Churckey Pilsner Style Beer—according to their marketing department (which appears to make up about 75% of the brewery) it's the first beer packaged in a flat-top steel can since sometime in the 1970s. The beer was OK, but for me it's always more about the beer than the packaging.

There was also a matter of cans from the first batch exploding after a couple weeks if kept @ room temp, as it's can-conditioned and continues to ferment after packaging. Apparently they've got that little glitch sorted out now.

Bought a four pack of Gold label last week. Some really wicked old fashioned looking cans there but I'm pretty sure that's because the brewer continues to market to elderly spinsters as opposed to cashing in on the latest retro trend. Pretty sure the beer is pretty crappy too but I haven't cracked one open yet.

Bought a Genesee Heritage 12-pack last week. Pretty sweet-looking grenade-style bottles. The brews - 12 Horse, Fyfe & Drum, and Summer Brew - haven't been all too bad, especially considering the price point (under $9 @ Winco)...

bought a 6 pack of Olympia tall boys when they re-packaged and supposedly went back to a classic "95% Malt" recipe. Still just a boring AAL, in my opinion.

I totally agree. I could care less what the package looks like. All I want is a great tasting beer.

This is the one I was going to mention. Talk about retro packaging! Small, fat brown bottles with original labeling and a twist-off cap that says "Twist Off" on it. I felt like I was back in 1979.

Maumee Bay Brewing brought out a retro Buckeye Beer last year. Never drank it back in the day but I had to try it based on the retro label.

The label was the best thing about that stuff...

Schlitz Gusto and Olympia 95% Malt...great to see them in my market and I'm not ashamed to say I dig them. With all this retro thingy going on, I hope to see an old favourite come back; Falstaff.

Love the idea, Joe, but the answer to your question is no, no, no, I have consumed the last of those original recipe beers I ever will consume, I've had many gallons back in the day, and am trying now to purge whatever vestige of their memory still lingers.

I had a chance to drink one last night, ordered a Bud (okay, not strictly what the OP was about) at the crap bar my friend's band was playing, but it was in my glass only long enough to pour it into the toilet, and fill it with one of the Flower Powers I had smuggled in. Life is way to short to drink any more of that crap.
