Excessive Ads from BA?!

The most offensive thing about this site is that they do not send me a free box of great beer once a month.

Thanks for clarifying that. The choice to describe the thread topic as 'Excessive Ads' is more accurate than 'Spamming'. I have no idea where the judgment 'sanitized' comes from in regards to that minor and appropriate change.

 

For those complaining about thread sanitization and deleted posts, join us on the WBAYDN thread. Alll sorts of shenanigans on many levels.

When I joined BA it was for the trading option. Extremely limited distribution in Montana and purchasing beer then was not an option. I’ve grown to fully appreciate this site, the community and the members. Joined the society to avoid the ad banners. I gladly drop the same amount of money annually that it takes to send one box via trade, or to purchase one bottle or four pack of a quality barrel aged stout or DIPA, to support what we do.

I have an Untappd account to log beers. I pay for my Beer Advocate account to converse with friends. $20 is $20.

 

I, for one, am missing the magazine. I'm not on here nearly as much anymore so I'm still debating whether to pony up more dollaros for more. I've lost $$ on All About Beer going away, too, so there's two magazines I now miss...and won't see a dime of my extended subscription to AAB refunded.

 

Complaining about using a free site? Why not demand a refund as well.

 

One idea I wanted to toss out and maybe a way to get folks to join is offering maybe another perk. @Todd what if you worked with one of your sponsors to maybe craft a unique beer glass for Society Members only as part of joining? Maybe someone like DFH or another could do up a cool glass with nice art that would be a nice limited item and then as part of membership you get the glass. Just an idea but maybe folks would enjoy one off items each year to keep folks interested in joining. I know a lot of online sites offer membership perks like this, just an idea to maybe get people to join and they land a cool limited item etc.

Food for thought rather than all the arguing about $20, maybe others could toss out ideas also, what would entice you guys to join then, what perk or item would sway you to toss in a few bucks.

I agree. How cool would it be as part of memebership you get a unique item each year. I understand maybe some additional cost but I know I would pony up a few bucks more to cover it. Then each year you land a nice one off item no one else can get and all. Just an idea, keeps folks interested and then they get something they can use etc. Figured rather than toss out all the bad lets get people to list out what they want then, use the forum to generate ideas and move ahead.

Love it. I'd be willing to kick in a few extra bucks to get a glass, esp. a unique one from BeerAdvocate. Shipping could make that quite a bit more pricey, though, and problematic from them, as BA doesn't box up or ship anything.

Perhaps starting a new thread, with some title like, What would motivate you to become a society member? Then solicit ideas at the $20 level, the $35 level, etc. Again, similar to the ideas for joining your local NPR station.

I'm heading out for the day, or I would start some thread along those lines.

 

It's relevant to his claim that he tried to voice his opinions about the ads on this site and was met with censorship. So in an indirect way yes, it is part of this discussion.

 

The best idea may be for Ba to speak with their sponsors who already have stores setup online and maybe they can work out shipping/costs. Member pays for membership, you get a code sent to you, then you go to sponsors site, enter code and gain access to membership perk item. I know there are logistics to work out but hey, maybe its a way to drive revenue and attract new people who would jump in for stuff like this.

I like that idea and at the bare minimum it would get a bit more out of us who are already members. I would pay a little more for something like that.
