According to Hay Merchant, either they cut me off after 7 or they are out of KBS... my vote is the latter.

Either way, its about time they took care of their Mud Turtles.

Texas breweries need to learn to use brand management agencies & graphic designers for more professional designs and logos for their products and packaging. The most successful packaging breweries have already done this (Hops & Grain and Austin Beerworks were both created by agencies before they opened). Jester King has a full time employee who series as their artist and brand manager (the tour de force ... Josh Cockrell). I'd say the 3 above are the 3 most successful breweries in Austin with a lot of thanks to their branding.

It's really going to define who is successful on the retail side in the coming years. Just my opinion though.

The only thing that gets me looking at Big Texas Brewing's bottles is the fact that it's almost impossible to tell who made it from their packaging. They pretty much have zero branding besides the MS Word fonts they use. Seriously... if that's pointing out on the shelf... who can tell what brewery made it?

Yup. Having a girlfriend who is a strategic planner means I get analysis of all the questionable branding choices that local breweries make.

Adelbert's re-branding was good too. Nice, crisp, professional looking labels, all identifiable as the same brand from a glance.

I think you're being a little harsh on Texas breweries. Whether they hire an agency or go in-house, I think most of the Texas breweries do a pretty good job of branding, both on individual beer labels and overall. The Texas Big Brewing or whatever being an exception (and personally I have always disliked DEBC's branding for some reason but I'm sure others don't mind it)

I think DEBC's branding is very eye catching. You can actually tell it is their beer just from the design. Good or bad.

Oh and Adelbert's new designs are indeed great.

I could list which breweries I think have poor branding, but won't, since YMMV as far as what people find appealing. TBB seems pretty ubiquitous however.

I'm gonna start a brewery and have all the labels adorned with MSPaint drawings and Papyrus WordArt. Ugly as hell but it'll be consistent.

There does come a point where crude and simple becomes what is called brilliant and artful. Sounds eye catching, lol.

    Good call... lol

Honestly for a small operation out of one's house, I'm not too concerned over their labels. Yeah they suck, but if the beer sells well enough that will change over time I would think.

Not all breweries can afford to hire an add agency or have a full time label artist

Wayerbacher and RR have had horrible looking labels for years and it never hurt them. As BAs shouldn't we be stressing the fact that it's what's in the package not the package its self that matters. If it were all about the package and branding then we might as well just start drinking BMC. They spend the most amount of time and money with branding and packaging and that's what matters right?
