I am drinking an expedition stout from batch 10,068 (november 2010), and it is really hitting it's stride. Lots of chocolate, leather, tobacco, with just a tiny amount of alcohol heat to remind you of the strength. Very powerful flavors, and just delicious. I have had older, but to me, this might be perfection for this beer. What is your favorite age for expedition stout?

18 months is peak for me, any thing after tends to really mellow out the booziness which I tend to appreciate

I have 2006-2012 right now. The 07 is phenomenal (best I've had)...drinking this tonight and feel like it's fallen off a bit or the batch may just have varied...All I know is that the few 2007s I've had are superior to any other year thus far:

I have one or two bottles from 07 left, and I haven't had it in a while, so that is great news!

I'm telling you...if you cellared it well, you will not be disappointed.

Too bad you live so far away, I'm putting together a 06-12 tasting here soon...I'll probably post something about the results from the people present.

5 yearsish on tap may have been one of my favorite beers I have had. I shared a bottle from 1994 is December, its was outstanding. Feel free to put some serious age on this one, it can take it.

This beer needs at least 2yrs IMO. I love it with 4+ years personally.

I absolutely loved this stuff fresh, can't wait to try them 1-3 years down the road.

I found some '07 off the shelf recently (yeah, seriously). Far from ideal aging conditions - sitting in fluorescent light, fluctuating temperatures, etc...

But MAN it's good! It's one of the best aged stouts I've had. I couldn't even imagine what it would be like under ideal cellar conditions. I recently found some '10 off the shelf that is drinking magnificently, too.

I have bottles from 2009 to the latest batch.Honestly, I looove this brew at any age, lately I have been digging the 11's with the heavy hop bite.(I picked up a case bottled 9/2011)As you and others have said, its glorious aged though.

    Cheers

expedition seems to either fade in and out or there is batch variation. sometimes I'll have a 2 year old one and think I waited to long on it and other times it is sublime. I like it fresh, I like the alcohol bite and if its a hoppy batch even better, but for ageing I think there is a sweet spot at 3-5 years old. I think it can go a lot longer too, I've had them from the mid 90s. definitely one of the few worthy of cellaring in qty.

I have about half a case of this one left, thinking of forgetting about it for a few years based upon feedback. Some of the comments on hear have me jealous, talking about mid 90s bottles... I would love to try one that old. I guess I'll just have to wait tho

Just opened up a 2011 and while it's only 7 mo the old, it really is drinking nicely. It's still got a lot of roast and a little bit of hops but it's much more well rounded than fresh. I've got a 2010 and a couple more 2011s left. Wish I had more because I'd love to try this beer at 3-4+ years. I just don't see how I can wait that long

I have some '10s that are drinking mighty fine right now also. I plan on sitting on most of them quite a bit longer though.

This beer has one of my favorite noses on a big stout. Suuuuuper chocolatey and biscuity. I can't get enough of this stuff. I'll have to find some bottles with age for comparison, hopefully it smooths out and the heat fades, it's as close to chocolate milk as I've come across in a beer!

I like to pull out some old expedition and double cream stout and mix em together and pretend like I'm having a bourbonless black note.... sigh.... :slight_frown:
