I just tried this on my last batch and it was a bit of a disaster. I used a spray bottle and a fairly large tub to spray on about 16-18 ounces of water on about 12 pounds of base grains. I mixed it all up nicely and milled about 10 minutes later on my normal setting.

As I understand wetting grains can soften the husks and help keep them intact, helping sparging drainage. I was also hoping to improve efficiency with less dust which ultimately becomes boil kettle slop I do not transfer to the fermenter. I use the Anvil electric system.

What ended up happening is my 3 roll mill got totally clogged and my rollers got caked to uselessness until I later pressure washed them with a garden hose. Also, seemed like alot of kernels did not crush as a result. It was a huge mess.

I know pro brewers use this technique in some way, shape and form. How can I effectively improve my result using wet grain without these issues? I appreciate any real experiences in the response, even if it involves one-time costs to fix like a different mill.

On one additional note I think may come up; I already use rice hulls. I wish to avoid using them in my quest to make beer very brewhouse efficiently and as economically as possible without sacrficing quality.

Done it one time and didn't have any issues you mentioned. I posted about it here (< link), and am glad you brought it up because I noticed a significant typo. In that post I said I used 1/3 cup of water per pound of grain but, after looking at my notes, it was in fact 1/3 ounce per pound of grain, or 3.5 oz water for the full 10.7 lb grain bill (about 20% of what you used).
1/3 oz of water per pound of grain wasn't too much. Next time I'll bump it to 1/2 oz (5 oz per 10 lbs) and see how it goes.

IIRC, I used the write-up at the link below as a guide:

Maybe you used too much water or (if the amount you used isn't too much) maybe it didn't rest long enough.
What's the gap setting on your rollers?

    Welcome to BA..........:beers:
