This issue has been reported sporadically the past several months locally on local Facebook groups. It all seem to have started since the opening of the Fermentaria, but it happens with beers filled at both locations, 1 famously exploded right on the bar counter after it was filled on the 3rd Anniversary (growler of Mosaic Mago). Initially, it was suspected that the batch of growlers were defective. After the new batch came in, with the new print in the back (to include Fermentaria info), it seems to settle down, then started to happen again. It was suspected prior and again that the beers are much more carbed that before, which caused the issue.

Personally, I had 3 that exploded all after the Fermentaria opened. There were 2 more incidents in trades that I suspected, though couldn't tell for sure, that it was growler integrity issues. My trade partner used a TH growler for a SARA fill and had that one exploded in his car. All anecdotal signs are pointing to poor growler quality from where I stand.

What I've been doing, for trade or otherwise is always keep growlers in a cooler or trash bag after fill. I pop the caps when I get home to relieve the pressure. You can nearly always tell by how difficult it is to pop the swing arms how much pressure has built. It's not ideal because it allows air to get in, but from my experience, you won't notice any oxidation at all.

The good news is that, rumor has it, but I'm very confident the news is real that they are planning on switching to 750ml and 2L growlers like that of Hill Farmstead. That should definitely address the issue and allow for easier shipping since 750ml will fit bottle shippers much better. In the mean time, email or call Tired Hands if you can't see them in person any time soon. They will take care of you.

I don't blame you....I am paranoid about shipping them....I can't afford to be replacing all of them plus shipping costs and materials

Just to clarify when you say exploding you mean glass shattering and blowing all over with contents right?

Bummed to see this is an issue yet again, hopefully they handle this soon. Are they at least replacing the growlers people are losing? And not just the glass but the contents?

Is this happening with certain growlers from them like 32 or 64 oz ones, or is it all of them?

The one that exploded over night....glass was all over...small pieces and large with the beer all spread out and dried up by the time I woke up....the part of the growler that was cracked in many places but still standing had beer still sitting in it.....the 2nd one that exploded when I attemted to open the swing top....shattered in large pieces and the beer went flying

Does Tired Hands fill any growler? I'm heading up in October and now this thread makes me want to bring a stainless steel growler.

Nope, their growlers only (they do a free growler exchange but that doesn't help this situation, obviously).
