I totally understand, to me it's just not worth the trouble of having one explode in my car and having to get my car detailed as a result. It's more of a hassle than anything else. I have no problem going to TH and eating / drinking, but by forcing customers to use TH growlers that have known defects when I have numerous other clean and suitable growlers in my house that have never had a issue is what I dislike.

I understand the sanitation / off flavors as a result, but that should be on the customer as a known risk. I'd rather the beer be off because I did not clean my growler properly vs it explode in my car or while my wife or someone is handling it and result in injury.

It has nothing to do with sanitation/off flavors, you can reuse a TH growler as much as you want. If they were worried about dirty growlers they would let you exchange your used growler for one they cleaned themselves, like a propane tank. Its all about buying the glass. To me, their beer is so good that I don't mind the growler requirement. I just now have 5 TH growlers and no others.

It's not about buying the glass. I'd gladly pay $5.00 more to use my own non-TH branded glass that I know is safer. If people are having countless safety issues, why not make a exception.

I think one reason they haven't made a statement or exception to their policy is legal reasons. If they publicly acknowledge that the growlers have the potential to explode and they are aware of it, and they don't stop selling them completely, then they could get sued like, even harder (sorry, not a lawyer :stuck_out_tongue:) if someone does get hurt. At least now they can play dumb and say they thought it was an isolated incident, or something along those lines.

I know several people personally who have had them explode in the car or while they have taken control of them. They have gone back and TH has replaced them no questions asked. They know it's happening with frequency.

I know they know, you know they know, but right now, could you prove in court that they know? Maybe, but it might be difficult. If they released a statement or changed their policy, it would be easy.

You don't have to be an attorney to know that the 'cat is out of the bag'. The issue of exploding growlers is well known (and well documented by the discussion on this public forum). If the attorney that Tired Hands has on retainer is advising them that by simply not issuing a statement that they are protected from lawsuits then they have hired a poor lawyer. The responsible and moral thing for Tired Hands is to issue some sort of Public Service Announcement to provide information to their customers which could potentially protect them from injury.

    Cheers!

P.S. I was at the Tired Hands Cafe and our waitress openly acknowledged that there have been multiple instances of Tired Hands growlers containing Tired Hands beer exploding.

Of course you can. Like someone has said they acknowledge it by replacing exploded growlers. Not very difficult to prove in my mind. Not to mention you are under oath in coart.

While there is antecdotal evidence on both sides of the equation, the odds that TH was the only one to receive the defective growlers, or that no one has heard of other supplies being affected are astronomical.

Given what I've heard TH is doing for their customers who have been affected, it's pretty clear they "care". But a bit more transparency would be nice.

How many people has this actually happened to? I was gonna ship a growler to a friend soon, I did back in August with no issue. Now that I've read this I'm hesitant to ship another.

them replacing the growlers isn't an admission of guilt that they're doing something wrong. They may be doing to keep customers happy

If it was an issue of the beer itself I would think there would be growlers blowing up all the time.

It makes more sense that it's a glass issue or an issue of growler care.

I have owned two 32 oz. with swing tops and both broke around lip when they were being filled at a brewery, so I'm staying away from this type growler.

I had a 64 oz. growler and right after I finished it the bottom fell out. Told the bottle shop where I got it and he gave me a new one and told me that the box was damaged on one of the shipments he got.

Have all of the growlers that exploded been filled with beers that had fruit added? And then they explode after getting warm?

Just got two 32oz TH growlers filled today at the Fermentaria. One is being shipped to Louisiana, the other is for consumption. Both are in a cooler on ice in my car right now - I'll let you know if they make it home in one piece.

Many, but by no means all, of the exploding growlers that I have heard about were fruit added beers (Mago, various Milkshakes, etc).

I was thinking I hadn't seen any posts about explosions with beers that didn't have fruit in them. Maybe after they warm the fruit starts to ferment out, causing excess pressure?

I've shipped these before with incident. All I did was release the top, while not fully opening it, to release some of the pressure. Nothing special, although I did pack it so it was standing up. Bottle shippers may be the way to go.
