I know that IPAs are typically better fresh, but Expo is so heavy that I wondered if anyone had tried aging it a bit. Is there anything to be said for holding a bottle or should I drink it within a month or so?
It's not going to get better with age. It's an IPA. It may not be awful in a year, but you'll enjoy it more if you drink it sooner than that.
I accidentally found one that I forgot to drink in a box of stuff I had aging for about a year. I tossed it in the fridge and drank it that night. It kind of had a barleywine profile to it but I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT. Drink fresh.
I had one a couple months old-kept refrigerated the whole time. Agreed it had a barleywine character to it but clearly the hops had faded a bit. Depends on what you like about your IPAs/DIPAs. I thought it was pretty awesome.
The only time I've had EH, its freshness could not be confirmed. I rolled the dice anyway, overpaid significantly for the bottle at Haven, and it was pretty terrible malty mess. It clearly wasn't fresh. I don't know how good it is fresh, but I do not recommend aging it.
the second release of 2013 was around sept. i stopped by the pub for SD beer week in early nov, had it on tap and it was amazing, as always. i bought a bottle there to take home, and it had a cardboard, earthy taste that i have never experienced before in an expo bottle. there might have been something that went wrong in the late 2013 bottling. Anyone else experiece this? a friend that also bought one during beer week had a bad bottle
I had presumably older bottle of this and will say that I personally do not recommend aging it. YMMV.
I don't think it is that big of a variety of opinions. A few people have been OK with aged bottles, but most are not. Of course, another issue may be *how* it was aged. Sitting in a closet at the San Diego 75 degree average is a lot different than being in a 35 degree or even a 50 degree refrigerator. Or is the hop breakdown not a function of temperature?
I've got a friend aging a ~2007 bottle of expo for his sons 18th birthday. The kid has at least 10 years to go
Since I'm an ironic moron, I still have some Enjoy by from 4/20/13 Let's see what a side by side with this year's 4/20 will be like.
