Going to the PNW on vacation later this year, i'll be spending 2 full days in Portland, 2 full days in Seattle. I've got ~1 more day to spend in either city. All things equal (budget/location), which city would you choose to be better spent imbibing on a cold one for the extra day?

Seriously, there's no wrong answer, and you're sure to find opinions here among this crowd somewhat evenly split - perhaps even along geographic lines.

If I were you, and it's manageable, I'd split my days evenly between the two, and spend the extra day making a pilgrimage to a place beyond city limits. Out to the Oregon Coast to Tillamook, say, or up to Bellingham here in WA. There's great beer, and no shortage of other worthwhile attractions, in both places, and many others which are within a day's reach.

EdwardAbbey - We'll be staying in Seaside on the coast for 2 nights as well, that's why I was thinking to spend it in either SEA or PDX.

Also - I understand there will be biases and such... but that's why I asked. Agreed that I really can't go wrong either way, but why not let BA'ers duke it out for me

If you could share any particular beer and/or non-beer-related preferences that you have, that may make any ensuing hashing out more germane for you. It's true you can't go wrong with either, but you can possibly go more right.

I'd say spend your extra day in Bellingham. If you spend two days in each city hitting the best places, Bellingham's best are going to be better than your day three breweries in either city. Make sure you hit both Wander and Structures. And hit Skookum on your way back to Seattle. That one's important.

I am taking nothing away from Seattle as an excellent beer destination by casting my vote for Portland, which I believe is the better beer destination of the two.

(And @EdwardAbbey decides to FTFY this post, I shall urge him to Get Off My Lawn.)

Excellent question - I'm definitely not an IPA-only person and haven't completely jumped head first into all sours (enjoy some, some not as much). I'm open to the best that the brewery offers, however some styles we particularly enjoy the most:

    Berliner Weisse
    Hefe's
    Stouts/Porters
    Brown Ales
    NE IPA
    Saisons

Open to trying everything. And of course we'll be trying to get our hands on some fresh IPAs brewed locally, but skew to much more of a variety in style preference overall.

Hood River could be real cool and i'll have to look into Bellingham as I hadn't considered that one yet. Thanks for the options.

Your post requires no intervention of mine, as your suggestion will not lead OP astray, particularly now that he has stated his personal preferences. Furthermore, as much as I acknowledge the boost that tourism can provide to my local economy, I'm not exactly clamoring for more people to start showing up here in Seattle, and trampling on all our lawns. They're all yours, brotherman.

Bellingham is awesome as well. You can't go wrong. There are some Marriott hotels in Bellingham that are reasonably priced but brand new and feel pretty luxurious for the price. The best Western in Hood River is pretty cool as well.

    Good luck!

Take the extra day to travel between Portland and Seattle or vice versa. And do it without traveling on I-5.

Was planning to take the train from PDX to SEA and then vice versa back.

EDIT: Looks like i could get a car for a week for cheaper than I was planning to get it for the Seaside/Cannon Beach days + train costs. Interesting idea, any suggestions for stops? Do you think a scenic 101 route would be cool one of the ways?

I hope you're planning on spending time in Astoria while you're in Seaside.

Personally, I'm not a fan of these types of arguments or discussions. Both PDX and Seattle have their appeal... I live in PDX, so of course I'd lean in that direction, but if I lived in Seattle, and thus was more familiar with the that city, I'd likely lean in the other direction. I like the Hood River/Bellingham alternative recommendations. Having spent some time in both cities, I'd pick Bellingham over Hood River. Both cities have a great beer scene, but there's something about the gritty, small town vibe of Bellingham, coupled with the amazing beer scene there, that has me gravitating towards Bellingham over Hood River (if I had to pick one place over the other). Admittedly, I'm an unapologetic Boundary Bay fanboy, so that might be part of the reason I'd pick Bellingham over Hood River, but there's just something very appealing about the vibe of that town/city.

I would look at the schedules and see if either the Timers or Sounders are playing and make my decision based on that.

Go with whatever the better weather option is. more than enough beer options in either city to support an extra day
