Or extras can be a way of sharing shelf beers that aren't distributed to each others local stores.I would think that extras would be less likely in person. When I do mail trades with other CA BAs I find it hard to find something extra to send them that they might not get in their town.[/QUOTE]

Thats true about IP trades but depends on the situation. A guy I meet in college is into beer and was able to pick up BCBS for me so I gave him a couple beers I got from trading for going out of his way to pick up the beer.

But extras can always change based on situation, IP or shipping

Thanks for these insights guys! I've done a few IPs lately where I brought an extra and I caught the other guys by surprise. I totally agree with the sentiment that there are no expectations around extras so couldn't care less that they didn't bring anything but it's still momentarily awkward. The last one the guy was bringing me a ton of beers for my 1 so I'm very glad he didn't add more on top of that. I think for IPs I'll try to suggest no extras now just to make sure I'm not catching anyone off guard.

My take...... IP, most of the time is between 2 people from the generally the same distribution footprint, so no extras. If I don't want extras, I'll simply state in the communication that I'd prefer no extras. This is usually not a problem. Recently a trader suggested we do a, one bottle <$10, non IPA as an extra, and a rather like that idea. What I have a problem with is traders giving less than positive feedback when extras are not discussed and none are sent. You agree on a trade, extras are just that, extra.
