I am a confessed grain chewer, no brewing reason other than to taste the different grain styles and perhaps catch some stale grains before I grind them up. Also, maybe really understanding the taste pre-wort/pre-ferment may help my long term brewing knowledge. They all taste pretty good to me!

I totally pop a few kernals. Especially when it's something new.

I also pop a few in at the end of my brewday while cleaning up. Give it a good suck and see how "dead" they taste. Sometimes have had some noticeable sugar left, sometimes have had hardly any sweetness.

I started homebrewing about 5-6 years ago. Been on hiatus the last 3 tho so very inexperienced compared to many others.

For me the advantage to the extract was it's real lack of complexity. I could focus on other parts of the brewday and get my process down better first before I made it more difficult. Keeping track of what was where and when and sanitation etc. Keeps me from getting infected. Now I'm trending back to brewing and while I have the AG equipment - I'll do an extract or 2 first again to get back in the saddle of "sanitize this, don't touch the damned thing at all till we pitch etc"
