"Extraordinary circumstances"

    Not sure if anyone has had this experience, but just shipped a package to a trade buddy in North Carolina (nice box). Did fine until final destination when got the dreaded "package exemption-damaged in transit." Called fedex national office and they said package was "completely destroyed" but wouldn't tell me any more. Finally got ahold of someone at regional ground center and they eventually told me that the driver forgot to latch the back of the truck and my package fell out and hit the ground with the truck going 35. Can only assume all the bottles broke, but who knows. I know generally they won't reimburse if its beer but honestly you may not be able to tell what it was after they were done with it. Any recommendations on how I should approach this with Fedex? Ill replace the box the best I can but not sure how to approach this with Fedex and figured this would be the place to ask

    I would tread lightly. Take the position, "I didn't buy the extra insurance so send me the $50 that is included." What was in the box? Collectibles.
    This is an insurance claim. When you start lying it becomes insurance fraud. Don't turn a list box of beer into a headache.

    Im not sure it's worth the trouble of *filing a claim*. Others will probably disagree with my opinion, but personally I would want the least amount of *things* tied to my name or account.

    In all my years of trading, I once had a package *disappear* from a hub. They couldn't find it. After weeks of searching, they told me I could file a claim. I never did, figured it wasn't worth the *attention* to my account or me having to come up with *what's in the box*. Call me paranoid I guess.

    I agree with you. Just wasn't sure if they would ask less questions given circumstances but ultimately I think you are right. Thanks for advice

    To update-the local place called me today and said they felt bad and that they see a lot of badly packed boxes break. From what I understood, if the box is poorly packed (i.e. they think its the shippers fault) they will generally "destroy" the package. If they think the packing wasn't the issues (i.e. if it falls out of a truck)-they are more apt to re-pack the box and generally send back. In this case, they took back to local facility, re-packed (less broken stuff) and are sending on to the original recipient. Gotta give props to FedEx on this one
