I'm trading IP with someone from the same state. He's giving me beers from different state that doesn't get distribut to our state. I'm giving him hard to find beers from our state that he couldn't find. If he's not from the same state it would be easy to throw in a couple extra beers that sets on the shelfs but those beers are easily available to him as well. I always give extras to people but I don't know what to do in this case?
Just toss something in that you think he would like that isn't currently on the shelf...or glassware...or meet somewhere that you can buy him a beer...lots'O options.
Maybe a couple beers that you particularly like that maybe he hasn't tried. Maybe something that's good but a little overpriced so he probably doesn't buy for himself. At the end of the day, a good trader will be grateful for any generosity on your part, just do your best.
First, I don't think your trade partner would be upset if you communicate that you aren't planning on an extras. For most of my IP trades that's what I do. Another option for the future is if you are traveling to a state with different distribution get a six pack or two of something that isn't available by you. For example, I picked up a 6 pack of Bell's Expedition stout in NY and use a bottle of that as an extra for IP trades since Bell's isn't available in MA.
Thanks for the ideas. I might get him a key chain bottle opener, everyone should have one of those. I'll get him one with a brewery logo on it.
This is basically what I do now and almost always hear back from my trade partner how relieved he was as he was struggling to come up with any meaningful extras.
If you cellar beer giving a few year on it as an extra. I know I'd be excited to get any cellared beer as an extra.
Yep totally cool to discuss extras (or lackthereof) up front. I always say I'm down either way but let the other guy decide as a gesture
If the agreed upon beers that you can get but he can't are not super pricey/limited you could just throw some duplicates too.
I am lucky enough to have a stash of homebrew my neighbor and I made, so I use that as an extra in little IP trades. I also throw in an aged 12oz bottle from the cellar of something that I particularly like, but I tend to keep extras pretty low key for IP trades in my home city - but certainly mention your plans so the other person knows what to expect.
I think it's weird to do extras for an IP trade and generally assume there won't be any. I certainly have appreciated when I've been the beneficiary of it, but I don't really understand it. The whole point of an IP trade it to make a trade easier. If I've somehow found a person nearby who has my ISO and wants what I have FT, but then I have to come up with some other out of distro or aged beer on top of it all, then it doesn't really make it easier for me. Might as well just ship at that point.
Yea but an extra is an extra. And to me is always easy to come up w something, even if it's something the other guy can get. It allows him to try or retry something on your dime and is a really cool way to do it? Might as well ship? I can usually get a couple of extras for the cost of shipping
