Is this normal practice? I agreed to a trade with another BA locally where we're swapping recent limited releases available locally that the other missed out on. I've never traded before and I'm looking at this as a way to meet BA's and get some references before diving into trading.

So, should I bring extras? I don't want to be rude or caught with my pants down if he shows up with extras.

i always confirm whether or not we're doing extras with IP trades so there isn't any confusion. typically i ask the other trader if they're cool with not exchanging extras for IP since it's usually not really necessary, especially if it's at a release where there's lots of trading/drinking going down.

I don't see a need to confirm. I'm bringing them whether they do or not.

I did once, and I didnt the other time I've done an IP. I felt like a total ass after forgetting to bring something to that second one. Won't happen again.

I don't see the point, since you're in the same place and extras are typically locals. I've done a couple and neither party did extras, but I believe we confirmed that ahead of time. (I'd check but this was on the old forum.)

I've done it for my IP trades but not to the same quantity as for a shipped trade. A couple of surprise bottles are always nice to give and receive.

For example in a 1-for-1 swap of a FW Parabola and an ET Imperial Biscotti Break, I gave a Deschutes Obsidian and a FW Velvet Merlin as extras, and got a Straffe Hendrik quad and a 2010 FBS.

In hindsight I wish I would have brought extras for one of my IP trades. Most are done within the same area so it doesn't seem as necessary. I had a guy bring me up some BA Blackout and he brought a regular Blackout and a Fat Head Head Hunter as extras. I felt really bad that I didn't bring him anything but my thinking before I left was that he was in my area so he could just pick up whatever he wanted. Thanks blacknyellow20!

Edit: From now on I will always have extras for IP trades from different areas

I always enjoy bringing extra's and don't care if I get them back or not in an IP trade. The only time I don't do it is when I already know the other trader (they are a regular at tastings we attend and we discuss to not do them) or if the negotiations were difficult and I feel like the other trader was trying to "win" the trade. I look at extra's as a way of saying thank you to somebody for being easy to deal with.

First, and only IP trade so far:
Thought about extras but I didn't bring any (forgetfulness was a factor) and he didn't either. Both of us were around the same area, and just exchanging ~$130 worth of 'gifts'

I usually do. If nothing more than some homebrews. The only time I didn't was when I arrange multiple IPs when visiting MI, I brought extras to the larger ones, but one was a 1-for-1, however she brought an extra and I instantly felt bad :slight_frown: . Plus one person killed me on extras (I brought 2-3, he gave 5-8) so I just felt shitty all night, almost couldn't enjoy my night at Ashley's...almost .

I am hoping to do some more IP trades when I head back to MI in the spring.

I always do extras in person and generally some nice bottles. Not having to pay for shipping makes me feel like I can be more generous with the extras, plus I like making people feel bad they didn't bring me anything.:grinning:

IP extras are great cuz you can actually see the look on their face when you surprise them!

    Normally this for me.

If I'm traveling though, I'll usually bring a local something for them to toss into an IP, if I can fit it into the luggage.

Being a local with you I understand the dilemma. Unless you have a stockpile of outside beer (something I don't have access to except for trades) it's probably easiest to agree ahead of time (Crusian and I did this recently..and fortunately we met somewhere cool to pop a couple bottles (Denton, Frye St area) and instead of extras we held an impromptu share.

    Just a thought

I do it whenever possible, but I'm not going to bring them an easily-obtaining shelf local, and I try not to reextra an extra from a former trade (especially if I've never had said beer). So, it can be tough to pick one out at times.

When I do in person trades I'm usually coming in from out of town, so I try to bring a little something. It's not a big deal either way though.

Usually we meet at a good watering hole, and I make it a point to buy my trade partner a beer though.

i've done about a half dozen or so ip trades and i always bring homebrews as extras. only once, on my last trade have i ever gotten hit with a non-homebrew extra. it was awesome but i kinda felt like a dick to not at least have some non-homebrew there.
