Usually I either send 1 limited extra (like a Bruery RS beer) or send a bunch of random extras.

I also don't care if someone uses the extra in a trade or pass it along to someone else. I sent it for them to drink, trade, use as you want. I try to check wants to at least send a style they like, but if I get it wrong they are free to trade it or re-extra it. Same applies if it can help you get something else you want.

Currently in the midst of my first trade on the site - my shipment went out and he is waiting until it is received to ship his end. Anyways, I tossed in a couple extras that aren't distributed out of the state, but as the cellar expands I hope to be able to send nicer goodies along. A friend is also just getting his distillery established (first shipment to stores was delivered last Friday) so I may have to toss in some of his products in the future.

Now I just wish I had read this before shipping my end of the trade.

Extras are awesome (receiving and sending) and are usually more exciting to me only because I never know what I am going to get.

Whenever I'm setting up a trade I always ask the person I'm trading with what styles they like for extras. As for how many or how expensive, it depends on alot of things, how big the box I happen to use is, how much communication there was, how much they had to wait on me (waiting on RS beers, etc), and just my general mood for the day. The nicest thing I've shipped as an extra was an Abyss which admittedly isn't as extreme as some of the things I've heard about people getting as extras, but I felt like I was being generous, especially when it was 1 of the like 6 extra bombers ^_^.

I never expect to get them in return though, it's nice when I do, especially when the box is loaded with peanuts. It's fun digging around with your arm trying to figure if the box is empty yet and then finding another beer hiding at the bottom. I've never really received any huge extras, but pretty much all the ones I've gotten have been good (except stuff from Six Point. Just really don't enjoy their stuff >_<)

Either way, I don't consider them to be a requirement, just the fun part of trading. They also happen to be my regular drinking / small tasting beers since I pretty much never open any of the good stuff outside of a bigger tasting.

Greed stops a lot of good trades too I must agree with cpinto6!
I've had a few fall through because a deal I thought was fair turned into someone trying to SQUEEZE another ounce of beer out of an already generous deal....... I like to throw in beers of there preferred style and good solid locals. And maybe a box of local chocolates too! That way the ladies get a little some thing too.....

First trade I participated in -- got Sculpin and RR Damnation as extras. I didn't send any. Felt pretty bad so I shot a Double Simcoe, Double Trouble and Double Platinum as a thank you. I'm all for a couple of locals brews as extras.
