In my 5 years in NYC, both in the West Village, and now in Park Slope, I've always lived by the F line. Is there a better subway line for beer in NYC? I can't think of one. All of these places are within a couple hundred yards from their respective stops. 34th St - Gingerman / RnH 23rd St - Guilty Goose W4th St - Blind Tiger / Rabbit Club (plus the few others in the village) 2nd Av - WF Bowery / New Beer / DBA Delancey - Top Hops / Spitzers East Broadway - Malt and Mold Bergen Street - American Beer / Downtown Smith Street - Bar Great Harry 4th Av - Owl Farm 15th St - Double Windsor I know this is a stupid topic
its actually kinda interesting..always wondered how you guys roll..NY resident 50+ yrs i've been on a subway 2ce.. im told it's very dangerous
F rules. Outside of that it's the 6 for me which leads you to quite a few cool bars in the city (not as many? as F though) + it also brings you to Union Square where you transfer to the L train that delivers you to another great collection on bars in Brooklyn.
In another thread, people were debating the best city for beer on the East coast, and I mentioned that the subway in NYC is a tremendous asset for enjoying its bars. As I'm sure you know, your list is just a start. Many gems on that line.
Add Mr. Vino's Cucina (Forest Hills/71 Ave) to that list. Great selection. Grossly overpriced. It'd be interesting to map out the beer bars/stores in the city for each line. It would certainly aid some pretty epic beer "crawls".
I used to live on the F, now i live by the R (well, two blocks closer to an R station anyways), and don't really miss the crowds on the F. Two weekends ago I was down by the 7th ave & 9th st stop, and noticed that a bodega right there (next to the Bank of America atm booth) redid itself and is focusing on beer now. there's a bottle of KBS in the glass window that probably gets about 8 hours of direct sunlight per day, and went in and they had a few in the fridge for $30 each. no thanks! they had frangelic mountain and a ton of other old stuff, but judging by how they put everything right in the sun I wouldn't touch any of it.
Mr. Vino does have a great selection but I always feel like I'm getting ripped off there. Do you know of any reasonably priced alternatives that might be nearby? Also, the bar Station House nearby usually has a great selection too, but they've been getting into the habit of charging $9 or so for 9oz pours lately.
I guess not every stop is perfect - although 7th Av used to have the original Beer Table. As for the bodega - I know the evil that you speak of! Haha: http://beeradvocate.com/community/threads/most-expensive-single-bottles.84400/page-5#post-1959357
I don't. I wish I did because I work around that area. And out of curiosity, I just checked the beermenus listing for Cucina. Ridiculous. Here's the link. It's a good laugh. http://www.beermenus.com/places/9011-mr-vino-cucina
Totally by coincidence, I was just at that place! (corner of 11th and 4th Ave - right?) I felt like they took a page out of the "First Place Provisions" book. I actually grabbed some beers from the cooler that you don't see everyday and were priced appropriately.
Ha - the opportunistic bodega I went to was on 7th Av and 9th street. But I think I know the one you're talking about.
yeah, I was talking about the 7th ave/9th st one. i think they recently renovated and replaced the **** they kept behind a shower curtain with fridges of overpriced old beer
Can't believe they've jacked up their prices even more than when I lived there a year ago - I paid $12 for a bottle of KBS, but $30 is insane. The owner also likes to rant about how his prices are better than the "ripoff" Bierkraft, etc, etc. That said, when you're on your way home and are willing to pay for convenience, he gets a pretty good spread of things.
I must be getting tired. Those places aren't too close to each other. Anyway, they redid themselves as a beer place also... same price for KBS yadda yadda (and that was the only beer in the shop with a price tag). It must be contagious. As far as the one I was mentioning, nice guy behind the counter and they had a bunch of interesting stuff.
Yeah when I went in and saw KBS I was like "cool". Then saw the price and was like "not cool". I called the guy out about it. He said that it was a "very rare beer that costs me $22 per bottle" and he said he would be happy to sell it to me for $23, even though he would profit only a dollar. I laughed and walked out.
