Would be interesting to compare it to Kelson's Paradigm Brown Ale. That was one of what I would call "the best beers I have ever had".
Don't need to look hard, it's pretty ubiquitous. It's also pretty damned tasty. My guess is it utilizes some darker roast malts, lots of chocolate flavors and a bit of dark coffee. Maybe email the brewer.
