I know it probably sounds weird to a lot of people to make a combo of blends like this, but have any of you done it? I brewed with Falconer's for the first time the other week and I tried the beer yesterday. I liked it, but felt like it was missing some of the stone fruit qualities that I like that I have tasted with Zythos. I also think it could have been remedied with some Citra, but I am fresh out of it and I have a pound of Zythos on the way.
I found one commercial example that lists both as being used with Citra with good reviews... http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2385/79399/
Pinner from Oskar Blues has them both in there, but it also has Citra, Mosaic, Cascade, Centennial, Calypso, Azacca, Eldorado, and an EXP hop. For having so many varietals it is super drinkable and complex.
Sounds like a great idea. I'll bet with a 50/50 of Falconer's and Zythos you could make a pretty kickbutt IPA. Heck... maybe even use the HopShot for bittering to boot! Whatever works. FWIW, I have used HopShot as an aroma addition several times and it is surprisingly good. Seems similar to Amarillo or Warrior, at least the ones I've used.
I love using hop extracts in my commercial brews, but typically for IPA's I like to skip a bittering addition altogether. Hop bursting FTW!
Falconer's results in generic nondescript hoppiness when used by itself; I've done two "SMaSH" beers with it both were underwhelming and required a second dry hopping with Citra and Amarillo for resuscitation of a discernible hop flavor and aroma. OTWOA by DC Brau was a Falconer's only beer (at least it was), and while it is good, it still suffers from the generic hoppiness I noticed in my beers hopped solely with the Falconer's blend. I've never used Zythos, but without some additional strongly flavored hops that may or may not be in the Falconer's blend, my guess is that you'd be underwhelmed.
I've never used Zythos, but just used Falconers in an IPA, along with Moteuka and Columbus, and love the way it turned out.
