Harvest ales are one of my favorite styles. Founders is at the top of that list.

I grew some hops in my backyard this summer, hoping that I could make my own...didn't get a single flower:slight_frown:

Just an FYI, most hop plants will not produce many cones until 2nd and subsequent years....I got some Cascade cones last year on my first year plants and tons this year!

When reading about this I found the hop bill interesting. Do you get a bit of the citrus and fruit of the Nelson and Citra hops? I know being a red ale, it isn't going to give you the same hop burst of an IPA, but I am curious to know if they show themselves at all. If they were too intense, then the maple would have a hard time getting through.

I hope to see for myself in the near future, but at the moment my beer fridge needs to give up some space.

Like most Anchor beers, it is subtle.....you can get a bit of the citrus from the hops, especially as the beer warms, but the maple flavor per se, is not very noticeable to me...a solid beer for sure!

Thanks! You are so right though...Anchor always plays it quite subtle. I love that there are breweries that approach product this way. I also love that there are breweries that offer BIG flavors. Both approaches can be delicious.

Definitely a Marzen/Oktoberfest brew. I'm a big fan of Sam Adam's Octoberfest and it's available throughout the U.S. and yes, even in the often neglected Maritime Provinces :stuck_out_tongue:

Local Oktoberfest marzens from Two Brothers (Atom Smasher) and Metropolitan (Afterburner) are excellent.

I enjoy Oktoberfests and Harvest Ales, but I look forward to fall because I start breaking out all the barleywines and imperial stouts I've had stashed and then tons of those hit shelves early as part of the Winter seasonal creep. I could skip the seasonal creep on pumpkin beers, oktoberfests, summer ales, but when it means the big guns arrive earlier, I'm not complaining.
