Fall beer overload- how do you handle it?

So I know many of us look forward to the fall beer season, as I do, but as someone who is experiencing their first full Autumn as a craft beer junky (I started getting into craft beer in Oct 2013, so missed most of it), I'm faced with an overwhelming influx of seasonals and fall offerings, all of which sound delicious.

It seems like fall is especially bad for this, due to the sheer number of pumpkin beers, oktoberfests, and marzens, in addition to a number of bocks and even stouts that start rolling out now.

Most of these don't make it into the Pick 6 section of my local shops, so I'm faced with buying 4/6 packs, even though my preference would be to pick up 1 each of a whole bunch to try them out.

So my question is- short of dropping $500+ in the next month and filling my entire basement with fall beers (which would result in a car full of fall beers when my wife kicked me out for buying that much beer), what's the best strategy for making the most of the season before they're all gone? I've read the most popular lists for the styles on here, but for the most part, the beers I'm looking at are just the local brews and wide distro basics- not necessarily the top stand-outs that make those lists. So what's a budding BA to do?

Instead of dropping $500, and considering your places suck at including the good fall beers in your mix 6, I'd suggest hauling ass to Jersey. We have many places that allow you to buy singles of most beers and also have very good mix 6 selections.

If you are going to go for 4 and 6 packs, I suggest looking at the highest rated Octoberfest and pumpkin beers on this site and get the best of what's available to you.

Ditto. Wherever you're located in PA cross the border into a neighboring state that allows singles and mixed packs. Plan ahead, take the wife along and go to a fall festival near a good bottle shop. "Oh look honey! As long as we're here---"

Considering the fact that I'm 5+ hours from the Jersey border at best, and not in a position to go road trippin' for beer, I'm going to concentrate on figuring out the best strategy for my local area

Your best strategy is to USE THIS SITE!! Do your homework, research the styles you like and start with the brews that have a lot of high reviews. You won't find ALL of them but you can get started on a good number of them.

Still less than $500 in gas. We'll, then, take my second suggestion.

Get a second job, or rob a bank. I usually have to knock out a couple banks each fall

Some years I do variety; some years I do bulk. This year I just want maybe 4 beers total, at least a case of each. If I can pull that off I will be incredibly happy.

Just understand that you can't do everything, no matter which way you roll. Even in the Variety years, it's nice to have these types of beers in four- and six-packs, so you could ride little mini-waves when the mood strikes. Buy what you can, and beyond that, there's always next year; no regrets.

Im just going to load up on the Sierra Nevada fall mix packs. Delicious, no gimmicky pumpkin beers , and the beers are absolutely delicious. At $15 a 12 pack you can't beat it, imo.

I live in rural NE Oklahoma & really don't have that "problem" :stuck_out_tongue: I actually look forward to this time of year, as like variety & everything skews super light round here for the most part when the Earth is cracking due to insane heat 6 months of the year... I live for the day Fall release wipe me out here. For me Winter is when that accounting dilemma raises its ugly head, that is really only due the fact I am close to 3 other states:grinning:

To be quite fair...Kuhnhenn's All Hallows Ale is the one beer I truly crave in the fall. If I'm able to enjoy this one on tap a few times over the course of two months, I chalk it up as a success.

I know this doesn't fully answer your question, so my opinion...enjoy the fall beers on tap while you can. And then get mixed fall packs such as the Sierra pack others have mentioned.

Get a bunch of beer nerd friends to buy pumpkins or Oktoberfests and trade or do a tasting. If not find a bottle shop that includes them as singles or mixed sixers. Saves money and time if you can coordinate with friends. Just the other day 2 of my other BAs coordinated pumpkin beer purchases via text messaging and we'll get together probably in next few days to swap and sample. I just bought a sixer of Yuengling Marzen and I already know my other BA got some Sam Adams last week so we just need to swap a few.

I got caught in the web of mediochre pumpkin ales and "fallish" stuff last year. This year, I have a plan. Basically not getting reeled in by every $10 bomber that says "pumpkin" or "autumn" on it.

Strangely, and with a limited few exceptions, I've found that autumn is the one time of year that I tend to prefer most of the 4/6-pack format beers over bombers. No idea why, but it seems like my favorites all come in packs when the air is crisp...

There's no such thing as a fall overload! There's oktoberfests, porters and stouts, browns and bring 'em all over here one at a time.

try to go to beer tasting events wherever they have then within driving distance to your location. probably your best bet to sample more stuff for less $$$

like what stiffler said, seek out the top rated brews that are available in your distribution area and get whatever you can without pissing off the better half. just be sure to pick up something for her while you are out good beer hunting

and then there is always next year.....

Lucky for me I hate Pumpkin beers, no worries there. Eh on Oktoberfest brews, OMB is quite good, and local. BA stout season baby, love it.
