I'd do the same thing, it's not a big deal.

I was just being a jerk.

Same hop profiles, but the malt profiles are different in that the Octoberfest has Munich and some "Sam Adams Octoberfest malt" in addition to the pale malt blend and Caramel 60.

Boston Lager has double the IBUs though, and Octoberfest is slightly stronger.

This would indicate there might be some breadiness in the Octoberfest and it would taste less hoppy.

Here's the specs for Boston Lager:

    Malt Varieties
Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend and Caramel 60

    Hop Varieties
Hallertau Mittelfrüh and Tettnang Tettnanger Noble Hops

    ALC BY VOL / WT
    5.0%
    ABV / -3.8% ABW

    IBUS
    30

And then the specs for Octoberfest:

    Malt Varieties
Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend, Munich-10, Samuel Adams Octoberfest malt, and Caramel 60

    Hop Varieties
Hallertau Mittelfrüh and Tettnang Tettnanger Noble Hops

    ALC BY VOL / WT
    5.3%
    ABV / 4.1% ABW

    IBUS
    16

It's good! I stopped by the commissary a few minutes ago and they had 1 twelve pack in cans. I prefer Ofest in bottles, but I'm not going to be choosy. I text my station chief who is also a SA Ofest fan and he replied back "meet me at the Shell off post." So, at 10:00 am we sat at Shell and enjoyed the first Ofest of the year. It's 90 degrees here already, but neither of us burst into flames for drinking it outside of autumn.

Again, I'm not going to complain, but I kind of miss the festive orange packaging. Think 2014 (I think) with the orange trees in fall and blue sky in the background.

A photo from the Sam Adams website to motivate you to drink their Octoberfest during summertime?

The below photograph is more 'appropriate' IMO.

The 'best' time to drink Oktoberfest (Marzen) beers is when there are leaves on the ground. Just my opinion.

    Cheers!

If I waited for there to be leaves on the ground, I wouldn't ever be able to drink it.

Ha, the can in that first photo looks so out of place.

But if Corona can advertise during Christmas, why not?

    Wrong.

Me too. We are in the midst of our fourth heat wave of the summer in the Philly area right now. Needless to say but I do not expect any sympathy from y'all.

    Cheers!

It's been horrible. We had a random break for 2 days last week where the high was in the mid 80s. Most people thought it was great, but I'm one of those people that doesn't think the weather is great until we get highs in the lower 60s and lows in the 40s.

I lived in Philly for 6 months once on an internship. Had an apartment over close to Franklin Mills Mall (whatever its called now). You took 63 off 95 and then got onto Knights Rd. It was a fun experience.

In 2014 they renamed it: Philadelphia Mills.

I attended the Phillies game yesterday (they beat the Braves in this game) and my wife was complaining about how hot it was. I ‘cheered’ her up by saying it was cool compared to how tomorrow (today) will be.

Needless to say but you are living in the wrong area if your preference is temperatures in the 60s. Stay hydrated and remember whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!:grimacing:

    Cheers!

Edit: Oh, and one more thing: it's not the heat, it's the humidity!:stuck_out_tongue:

Lol I tell my wife we need to consider moving to Montana. Problem is we are so established in our careers, it would be tough. And we have her parents 10 miles from us and my parents less than a mile. Works out great for finding a babysitter.

I am a lifelong Braves fan and saw them play in Philly. Philly is serious about their teams too. Growing up going to Bama games, I can relate. To be honest, I kind of felt at home. haha

As my friend Scott (PAScott?) would say: "we can't move away from out support structure."

And they are looking good this year!

To add some beer discussion content: there are lots of quality beer choices at Citizens Bank Park & after the game a visit to Victory Beer Hall to drink some Victory Braumeister Pils to wait for the traffic diminish.

    Cheers!

Amen to that! My wife works long hours and it's always possible I will too, so it's nice having that support.

They are looking good this year. Just hope we don't blow it at the end. You know, when I was there it was 2006 and my beer choices were what every other college kid drank then (Miller, Bud, etc). My wife actually has a medical conference next summer in DC and we have talked about going up to Philly for a couple days since she has never been. I love the fact ball parks are getting better about offering good beer.

Maybe you would like to visit one of Philly’s many beer gardens? See link in post below:

If you enjoy German style beers I would highly recommend Frankford Hall to you.

No worries, I deserved it: there's no excuse for me being in that much of a hurry and not at least giving it a good hot rinse/cold rinse and a dry on a rack before using...if I had just squeaked my finger down the side and felt the dishwasher jet dry squeaky finish I probably would have. I had some time to kill waiting for it to get to under 55 degrees in the fridge, just slovenly of me.

Excellent post, thank you. I am going to guess the "Samuel Adams Octoberfest malt" is a custom roast, but may be similar to http://www.brewingwithbriess.com/Products/Caramel.htm#CaraMunich

As a complement to the ads presented in an earlier thread about the Wiener Märzenbier by Franziskaner Leistbräu here are a few more interesting ads.

They are all from Münchener Anzeiger. The first one is from October 5th 1873.
"The Wiener Märzenbier from the brewery zum Leist u franziskaner having become so beloved is [unreadable] tapped daily in Wagner's tavern. Barerstrasse 50."

"From monday october 6th except sundays and holidays each day old märzenbier from the brewery zum Leist und Franziskaner in Franziskanerkeller."

The next is from October 8th.
"From today daily old Wiener Märzenbier at Leistbräu"

"Old Wiener Märzenbier from the brewery zum "Leist" und "Franziskaner" is tapped each day at 6 in the evening in the 3 Mohren. Luitpoldstrasse 13. Schottenhammel."

The next is from 22nd of January, 1874.
"Wiener Märzenbier in the 3 Mohren from the brewery zum Leist und Franziskaner. Each day at 5 o'clock. Tapped from [fass?]
    Michael Schottenhammel"

The next one is from 23rd of September 1876.

This one is advertising Schottenhamel's presence at the Oktoberfest, him serving "old Märzenbier" from the brewery zum Franziskaner und Leist and the serving of that same beer at his own tavern "3 mohren". So this is 4 years removed from 1872 when Schottenhamel is said to have first served the Wiener Märzen at Oktoberfest, yet as is evident by the advertisements in the other thread this was not the first instance of it being brewed or served.

    Some additional food for thought.
