Fall isn't necessarily one of my favorite breweries in San Diego, but Plenty for All pils is solid and extremely refreshing on a hot day (all their beers range from solid to very good, but nothing they've brewed has been particularly outstanding, in my opinion. I don't say this to take anything away from them; I respect their output). They've started to bottle some of their beers, which is cool, but I'm curious why not can? I ask this as someone relatively ignorant with respect to packaging and distribution methods/models. I would think canning would be cheaper and serve their beer much, much better. If they canned Plenty for All, it'd potentially replace Mama's Little Yella Pils as one of my hot weather staples.

The traditional reasoning is that canning has higher startup costs, both in the canning line and having to order huge batches of empty cans with the beer info already printed on, whereas bottles can be labeled. With the growing popularity of labeled cans I'd be surprised if the second reason was still a major barrier for most breweries (unless they're particularly design/aesthetics conscious), but along with the cost of the canning line, it could be a pragmatic issue of having plans to bottle 22oz bottles of some of their bigger beers and wanting one packaging line to serve multiple needs - 12oz bottles of core beers like Plenty for All along with 22oz of limited runs - rather than maintaining a canning line for core/session beers and a bottling line for other beers.

Minimum orders on cans are crazy. With mobile canning lines, the equipment cost isn't always a problem.

Thanks for this! I had no clue.

Im a homer for this brewery (mostly because of the whole punk rock / hardcore music theme inside), but I think they make really solid beers and its a cool place to have a pint at. Love the neighborhood its in, never too packed, and they make a CA Common that is good compared to the other CA Common beers that I have had. Stoked that they are starting to bottle, and will totally pick up some of the Pils for my bachelor party weekend. Just my 2 cents ...

Yeah, I agree. I love hanging out there. It's a really fun place to grab a good beer, especially on Tuesdays with Tacos La Mezcla. I just haven't had anything that's really bowled me over, which shouldn't necessarily be construed as a criticism. They brew about a dozen different beers all ranging in quality from good to nearly great, which is impressive in and of itself.

Also don't forget the stigma against cans is still very strong in the beer consumer market. They will probably sell more with bottles, especially if their product isn't groundbreaking.
