I don't feel any shame when drinking a macro but I find that I like them less and less over time. I don't intentionally buy 'faux craft' beer, however I did buy a six pack of Third Shift a few weeks ago thinking it was craft and could tell after one drink it was made with adjunct. Even though it wasn't bad, I did go back to the same store and bought some Dead Guy Ale instead.:grinning:

I was listening to 'Move it on Over' when I joined BA so when it came to picking an Avatar it seem appropriate.

Well put. While I totally agree with the good beer/bad beer (who cares who makes it!) philosophy, you make a concise, and good point.

The pros seem to be well documented here: good gateways, better that than their flagship stuff, etc. My main con (aside from the 'sneaky' lack of disclosure about who is actually behind it that I've noticed on some of these 'faux' beers), is just concern that it will end up pushing smaller (better [not that smaller=better, inherently]) off the shelf or out of the market in some places.
In a vacuum (not that I can fit in the vacuum at my house, but you know what I mean...), I don't mind the idea of the faux craft stuff. The pros tend to outweigh the cons in general; where I draw the line and see a problem is if it adversely affects a better product because of the power (money/distro/etc) available behind the 'faux' stuff. Short of that, drink what you like, mediocre>bad

That annoyed me too, I swear nowhere on the cartoon or the bottle did it say "Coors". Others members posted pictures with it on the label but it wasn't on the ones I bought. However I was schooled in the subtleties of shelf placement, billboards and TV ads during the NCAA Tournament as a tip that "It might be a Macro!".

It's owned and imported into the US by Heineken, the third largest brewing conglomerate in the world (w/about 9% of the total market, compared to ABInBev's 18% and SABMiller's 10%).

That'd be a "macro" under most peoples' definition.

Think apparent play on the "Band of Brothers"- ha, ha, is a bit offensive.

You seriously can't find the name "Budweiser" on the bottle of Black Crown? :astonished:

Lord, I hope you don't drive.

That's my biggest issue. I have no problem with them trying to make new beers, but don't hide them behind other names. If the beer is good, I don't care who makes it. It would be ridiculous to write off an awesome beer only because of who made it.

It seems in the 60s and 70s you had lots of advertising trying to sell certain beers as sophisticated adult drinks. Why did the advertising all shift to Buds MacKenzie and bikini teams? Did the shift create a bigger opening for craft to get going?

Within reason, I suppose you mean. I'm presuming you're talking about the current crop of breweries of which we're aware. You're not advocating supporting the neo-**** movement, should they decide to open a brewery, and release a really kick ass Weizenbock, I hope.

Because people in marketing aren't stupid (at least when it comes to marketing). They realized that more than 30% of their sales were to the college age crowd, and the underage crowd as well.

Although if someone considers Goose Island to still be craft...well, that still wouldnt change anything as far as Newcastle goes. It would still be a macro.

That said, in those now increasingly rare circumstances that Im in a restaurant with Guinness, Newcastle and BMC on tap, I order a Newcastle every time.

This use to be a fairly common occurrence, not so much anymore (partly due to choice, mostly due to ability to make that choice).

Note to self: Not everyone has the same sick sense of humor as you, so dont reply to this.

Self to note: Done. But I thought of a few good options and they were really funny. And sick.

You obviously misinterpreted my post. I mean that Black Crown/Batch 19 are a couple of the few that they actually fess up to owning...

Blue Moon is hands down one of the worst beers I've ever had can't stand the smell, taste or mouthfeel. And as a whole really left me w/a horrible impression of the style; witbier. I've since discovered better representations of the style, thankfully. Faux craft is just that, but if it's a gateway for others so be it. We all started somewhere...

Not trying to pick nits here, but this was your original post...

I'm not sure who wouldn't interpret that to mean that Black Crown isn't putting their name on it.

I know, I know. BUT you can't edit your post after a certain amount of time. The "despite this" was supposed to refer to the fact that those beers DO have the name on it. Correcting you was the second time I did it in this thread... Hasty posting is now the bane of my life! lolz

That would be a damn shame. Of course within reason.
